"My life’s purpose is to declare war on repression. It is an unbeatable foe and a lifelong obsession. In waging this fantastical and futile war, my only hope is to raise awareness of repression as the root of all evil. It is my belief that through fully understanding our own repression, we can achieve both inner peace and peace in the world."

This award is given to celebrate and encourage the development of young printmakers in their craft.

"My work begins with the experience of motherhood and opens out into broader questions of responsibility, fear, and hope. In my intaglio series In Responsibilities Begin Dreams, I reimagine children from found family photographs, lifting them from their original contexts and placing them in new, imagined worlds. Through this, I move between the intimate and the universal: moments from my own life become a way to think about the futures we collectively hope for—for other children as well as our own. The found images act as a bridge between personal memory and shared narratives, allowing the children depicted to become symbols of possibility, vulnerability, and the quiet bravery that childhood often requires."

This award is given to celebrate the use of black and white in printmaking.

Judith Westrup

Judith Westrup is a printmaker who works in the medium of linocut. Judith’s life and art is deeply rooted in the chalk Downland, the rolling Wealden hills and the wide skies of the Thames estuary, where she explores the traces of these immensely historic landscapes. Judith works on each print intuitively, engrossed in the slow and repetitive physical processes that characterise the medium of linocut – deliberately carving the linoleum plates, carefully rolling ink and slowly winding her cast-iron press before lifting each print, layer by layer. She often overlays imperceptibly pale free-inked gradients to convey the deep stillness of ancient places, blurring the lines between ancient and present times.

This award is given to celebrate the use of colour in printmaking.

"As with my medium, the subject of my work varies considerably, but this always links back to my own personal experiences: experiences of being a disabled woman, of being a part of the natural world, of being part of a community and a family or simply of having lived a life that is unique to me. My recent work has been engaged with the idea of memory; I have an archival urge, fuelled by my fear of forgetting, so I have been exploring the idea of preserving the ephemeral."

"My work explores the beauty of the natural world through reduction linocut printmaking. Inspired by hedgerows, wildlife, and the changing seasons, I create images that reflect moments of connection — the pause before movement, the glance of an animal, the rhythm of nature observed closely and patiently."

Country Photographer
Marie Theresa South

Marie enjoys going from an initial idea, to sketches to compose a picture and then moving on to paint, felt, sew or print it. She finds it very satisfying to see an idea come to fruition in a frame! Her inspiration comes from in her surroundings, particularly the Derbyshire countryside and the small village which she lives in, near Ashby de la Zouch. A wide variety of countryside animals and plants influence her work. Marie is also a keen photographer and she finds that photography, printmaking, wet felt making, sewing and painting complement each other.
