Our new 8-week season of film screenings, celebrating 100 years since silent cinema reached its extraordinary peak as an international art form, begins this coming Friday 16th October with ๐•ฏ๐–Š๐–— ๐–‘๐–Š๐–™๐–Ÿ๐–™๐–Š ๐•ธ๐–†๐–“๐–“ [๐•ฟ๐–๐–Š ๐•ท๐–†๐–˜๐–™ ๐•ท๐–†๐–š๐–Œ๐–]

At its Berlin premiere in 1924, one critic called ๐•ฏ๐–Š๐–— ๐–‘๐–Š๐–™๐–Ÿ๐–™๐–Š ๐•ธ๐–†๐–“๐–“ โ€œbeyond criticismโ€ โ€“ and nearly a century later, it is easy to see why. Director F.W. Murnau and his cinematographer Karl Freund revolutionised cinema with their entfesselte Kamera or โ€œunchained cameraโ€, which glides through revolving doors, races across hotel lobbies and rides elevators. With only one intertitle and a powerful yet nuanced performance from Emil Jannings, the film achieves what critic-historian Siegfried Kracauer called โ€œpoetry in picturesโ€. For the young Alfred Hitchcock (who's third film, ๐Ÿ…ฃ๐Ÿ…—๐Ÿ…” ๐Ÿ…›๐Ÿ…ž๐Ÿ…“๐Ÿ…–๐Ÿ…”๐Ÿ…ก also features in our programme), this film was a key formative influence.

Kent MOMI marks 100 years since silent cinema reached its extraordinary peak as an international art form, with an eight-week season of screenings at the museum, every Friday from 16th October.

On Friday 4th December we show ๐Ÿ„ฟ๐Ÿ„พ ๐Ÿ…‰๐Ÿ„ฐ๐Ÿ„บ๐Ÿ„พ๐Ÿ„ฝ๐Ÿ…„ [๐Ÿ„ฑ๐Ÿ…ˆ ๐Ÿ…ƒ๐Ÿ„ท๐Ÿ„ด ๐Ÿ„ป๐Ÿ„ฐ๐Ÿ…†] (dir. Lev Kuleshov; USSR, 1926), a masterpiece born from poverty.

When Soviet studios demanded austerity, Lev Kuleshov responded with a stripped-back adaptation of two short stories of 1905-06 by American author Jack London: a handful of actors, and a few acres of wilderness near Moscow standing in for the hostile Yukon of the Klondike Gold Rush of 1896-98. The limitations became the filmโ€™s strength, creating extraordinary intensity, claustrophobia, suspicion, fear and obsession. Long neglected, ๐Ÿ„ฑ๐Ÿ…ˆ ๐Ÿ…ƒ๐Ÿ„ท๐Ÿ„ด ๐Ÿ„ป๐Ÿ„ฐ๐Ÿ…† has re-emerged as a cornerstone of silent cinema.

Kent MOMI marks 100 years since silent cinema reached its extraordinary peak as an international art form with an eight-week season of screenings at the museum.

On Friday 13th November we show ๐Ÿ„ฐ ๐Ÿ„ฟ๐Ÿ„ฐ๐Ÿ„ถ๐Ÿ„ด ๐Ÿ„พ๐Ÿ„ต ๐Ÿ„ผ๐Ÿ„ฐ๐Ÿ„ณ๐Ÿ„ฝ๐Ÿ„ด๐Ÿ…‚๐Ÿ…‚ (็‹‚ใฃใŸไธ€้ , Kurutta Ichipฤ“ji) (dir. Teinosuke Kinugasa; Japan, 1926). This early Japanese masterpiece was believed lost, until the director found 3/4 of the film in an old rice bin in his storeroom in 1971.

Set โ€“ like the seminal 1920 Cabinet of Dr. Caligari โ€“ in an insane asylum, ๐Ÿ„ฐ ๐Ÿ„ฟ๐Ÿ„ฐ๐Ÿ„ถ๐Ÿ„ด ๐Ÿ„พ๐Ÿ„ต ๐Ÿ„ผ๐Ÿ„ฐ๐Ÿ„ณ๐Ÿ„ฝ๐Ÿ„ด๐Ÿ…‚๐Ÿ…‚ reaches deep into traditional Japanese art forms (especially Kabuki theatre, with its stylized masks) to create a profoundly modern and cinematic representation of altered states.

We mark 100 years since silent cinema reached its extraordinary peak as an international art form โ€“ distinct and different from the sound cinema that dominated screens from the 1930s, and, in some respects, superior.

This 8-week season (October 16th- 11th December) celebrates both acknowledged masterpieces and bold rediscoveries from across the world, offering a rich cross-section of styles, from realism and psychological drama to avant-garde experimentation.

The holy grail of all cinema historians and archivists, perhaps the greatest film ever made, is the original 8-hour version of Von Stroheim's excoriating, ultra-realist ๐•ฒ๐–—๐–Š๐–Š๐–‰, luminously photographed by William Daniels (Greta Garbo's favourite cinematographer).

We show the version cut by MGM in 1924 โ€“ not the grail, but a compelling film experience, too rarely seen. The search continues for the still-missing 4 hours of footage (some has been found). Note this 2 hour 30 minute film will have a brief interval, and an introduction by Mr. David & Dr. Joss.

Lรฉgerโ€™s 1924 Ballet mรฉcanique was inspired by Chaplin as much as by Cubism and other movements. La Coquille et le Clergyman, from a script by theatre radical Antonin Artaud, first shown in 1928, provoked controversy for its woman director, Germaine Dulac, a long-over-shadowed, key pioneer of the avant-garde. In the hilarious Paris qui dort, by the great Renรฉ Clair, the city awakes to the madness provoked by a scientistโ€™s โ€œcrazy rayโ€, which can "freeze" people, mid-motion, at will (usually, this being French, in compromising positions).

One of the most expensive silent comedies ever made, Buster Keatonโ€™s แด›สœแด‡ ษขแด‡ษดแด‡ส€แด€สŸ (Friday 27th November) was based on a true event of the American Civil War.

And ๐“ฃ๐“ฑ๐“ฎ ๐“–๐“ธ๐“ต๐“ญ๐“ป๐“พ๐“ผ๐“ฑ (Friday 11th December) - a black comedy about starvation, cannibalism and existential crisis? In Chaplin's hands โ€“ miraculous, delicate, unforgettable.
