Many years in the making, our exhibition 🅃🄴🅁🄴🄽🄲🄴 🄼🄰🅁🅂🄷 & 🄿🅁🄾🄳🅄🄲🅃🄸🄾🄽 🄳🄴🅂🄸🄶🄽: 🄵🄸🄻🄼’🅂 🄼🄾🅂🅃 🄸🄽🅅🄸🅂🄸🄱🄻🄴 🄰🅁🅃 has been made possible by Terry’s gift of original materials to the museum’s curator – his daughter, Joss Marsh – shortly before his death in 2018. There is an irony here, since it was Terry’s decision to have “a nice tidy up”, in the mid-1990s, disposing of many of his sketches and designs, that led Joss to founding Kent MOMI, with her archivist husband David Francis, in the hope of persuading other back-room boys to leave their materials to archives and museums, instead. Terry never tidied up again, and his widow, Sandra, and Joss’s sisters Gina and Rebecca made sure that the contents of his studio found their way to Deal.

The image shows an excerpt from Terry's storyboard for the cab chase in 𝓢𝓱𝓮𝓻𝓵𝓸𝓬𝓴 𝓗𝓸𝓵𝓶𝓮𝓼 𝓢𝓶𝓪𝓻𝓽𝓮𝓻 𝓑𝓻𝓸𝓽𝓱𝓮𝓻 (1975), Gene Wilder's directorial debut. To help Wilder out, Terry agreed to story-board the entire movie for him, a kindness Wilder did not forget, the pair becomeing lifelong friends.

The aim of our newest exhibition 🅃🄴🅁🄴🄽🄲🄴 🄼🄰🅁🅂🄷 & 🄿🅁🄾🄳🅄🄲🅃🄸🄾🄽 🄳🄴🅂🄸🄶🄽: 🄵🄸🄻🄼’🅂 🄼🄾🅂🅃 🄸🄽🅅🄸🅂🄸🄱🄻🄴 🄰🅁🅃 is not to show film designs as artworks – though many of them are stunning artworks – but to show Terry and his art department colleagues as they really lived and worked, behind the scenes – not only as individual film artists, but, in succession, as apprentices, assistants, collaborators, mentors, sometimes grand masters, and – above all – friends.

Hence this exhibition’s special focus not just on Terry, but on John Box, “the magician”, Terry’s much-loved senior colleague on five films together (including 𝓛𝓪𝔀𝓻𝓮𝓷𝓬𝓮 𝓸𝓯 𝓐𝓻𝓪𝓫𝓲𝓪, 𝓞𝓵𝓲𝓿𝓮𝓻! & 𝓓𝓻. 𝓩𝓱𝓲𝓿𝓪𝓰𝓸) and on Terry’s lifelong friend Tony Rimmington (“Rimmers”), a fellow assistant art director on Lawrence, a one-off and individualist who found his permanent niche as a specialist in hardware and engineering (boats, planes, and anything that exploded).

Our major new exhibition, 𝚃𝚎𝚛𝚎𝚗𝚌𝚎 𝙼𝚊𝚛𝚜𝚑 & 𝙿𝚛𝚘𝚍𝚞𝚌𝚝𝚒𝚘𝚗 𝙳𝚎𝚜𝚒𝚐𝚗: 𝙵𝚒𝚕𝚖’𝚜 𝙼𝚘𝚜𝚝 𝙸𝚗𝚟𝚒𝚜𝚒𝚋𝚕𝚎 𝙰𝚛𝚝 raises the curtain on what Terry Marsh concealed – with modesty and imagination, for over 40 years, from his first major assignment, as a young assistant art director, tasked with building the huge set of Aqaba for David Lean’s masterpiece, 𝓛𝓪𝔀𝓻𝓮𝓷𝓬𝓮 𝓸𝓯 𝓐𝓻𝓪𝓫𝓲𝓪, under his mentor John Box, the pair (pictured) later receiving Oscars for 𝓓𝓻 𝓩𝓱𝓲𝓿𝓪𝓰𝓸 and 𝓞𝓵𝓲𝓿𝓮𝓻!). Marsh was later award-nominated for films including 𝓣𝓱𝓮 𝓗𝓾𝓷𝓽 𝓯𝓸𝓻 𝓡𝓮𝓭 𝓞𝓬𝓽𝓸𝓫𝓮𝓻 and 𝓣𝓱𝓮 𝓢𝓱𝓪𝔀𝓼𝓱𝓪𝓷𝓴 𝓡𝓮𝓭𝓮𝓶𝓹𝓽𝓲𝓸𝓷. The story also carries a personal note, as Terry was the father of Kent MOMI's curator, Joss.

Thank-you The Deal Despatch for the feature in the new issue in which our assistant curator Natasha Poljakowa outlines our new mini-exhibition 𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧: 𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐃𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝. The exhibition explores the Deal childhood and life-long connections of Norman Wisdom to the town, tracing back his old haunts, places lived, and his formative experiences here. The exhibition is open until Spring 2027.

This Saturday (11th July), we welcome renowned British film scholar, author, and broadcaster Ian Christie to the museum to give a special talk; 🆂🅾🆅🅸🅴🆃 🅲🅸🅽🅴🅼🅰 – 🅽🅾🆃 🅹🆄🆂🆃 🅶🆁🅴🅰🆃 🅳🅸🆁🅴🅲🆃🅾🆁🆂 🅱🆄🆃 🅶🆁🅴🅰🆃 🅳🅴🆂🅸🅶🅽🅴🆁🆂 🆃🅾🅾 for which we still have a few tickets left, but do hurry!

Ian unfolds a penetrating analysis of the obscured designers of such major Soviet classics as Kozintsev and Trauberg’s 𝓣𝓱𝓮 𝓝𝓮𝔀 𝓑𝓪𝓫𝔂𝓵𝓸𝓷, Eisenstein’s 𝓐𝓵𝓮𝔁𝓪𝓷𝓭𝓮𝓻 𝓝𝓮𝓿𝓼𝓴𝔂 & 𝓘𝓿𝓪𝓷 𝓽𝓱𝓮 𝓣𝓮𝓻𝓻𝓲𝓫𝓵𝓮 𝓟𝓪𝓻𝓽 𝓘𝓘, as well as Kozintsev’s great Shakespeare films. Is it too late to start reclaiming credit for those who designed and built these enduring classics?
