Craig Cameron, Estate Factor, Teasses Estate, Ceres delivered a very interesting and enjoyable talk, ‘Forgotten stories of the Barony of Teasses’ at Fife Folk Museum last night.
Teasses estate has a long and exciting history. The Lands of Teasses were first recorded in the 13th C. with a castle on the site and extensive acreage, all gradually reduced over the following centuries. There is evidence of Neolithic activity; during the 16th century the lands were the property of famous privateer, Admiral Sir Andrew Barton and a later landlord, Norman Leslie, was charged as lead conspirator in the murder of Cardinal Beaton at St Andrews castle in 1546.
When the Morrison family took ownership in 1996, the estate and its Victorian mansion had fallen into disrepair and they embarked on an ambitious programme of refurbishment. The gardens at Teasses are some of the finest to have been created in Scotland in the last 20 years.
Fife’s Museums club together to reach more people in Fife Family Focus
28 June 2024
Fife has a wealth of museums and heritage centres, from volunteer-run gems to exhibitions showing objects of important national and international significance. Now,locals and tourists alike will find it easier to find great places to visit in Fife, through a new leaflet that will become commonly accessible across the Kingdom.
Funding from Museums Galleries Scotland has helped the Fife Museums Forum produce an eye-catching and accessible way for more people to find out about where they can visit and what they can see in their local area.
Freshly designed by Lochgelly-based Mint Modern, 15,000 of the leaflets have been printed and will be popping up in local museums, libraries, information and visitor
centres in and around Fife. The leaflet provides key information and access details for 16 museums across Fife.
As a collaborative effort the production of the leaflet has brought together many Fife museums, large and small.
Fife’s museums include OnFife venues, Kirkcaldy Galleries, St Andrews Museum and Dunfermline Carnegie Library & Galleries, which display objects from Fife Council collections as well as changing temporary exhibitions. There are places that
connect Fife’s special cultural heritage to the world; including the Scottish Fisheries Museum, and the R&A World Golf Museum in St Andrews. Then there are some truly unique collections accessible at the Scottish Vintage Bus Museum, Fife Folk Museum or the Museum of Communication in Burntisland.
The leaflet also includes a QR Code direct to Welcome to Fife’s website where
website visitors will be able to access all the venues’ latest exhibitions and events.
Fife Museums Forum Chair, Jane Freel, says: “I'm delighted the forum have worked
together to create this beautiful leaflet. I am glad more people are able to pick up a
copy and find out what Fife has to offer.”
Smaller and community run museums are also benefiting from being part of the
leaflet. Pam Cranston from Save Wemyss Ancient Caves Society (SWACS) says:
“We truly welcome the opportunities the new Fife Museums Forum leaflet offers us to
advertise our local history museum and tours of the famous caves and carvings
more widely. The new leaflet has the potential to enable many more visitors to
access both our museum and visitor centre and the caves-site itself.
Lucy Casot, CEO of Museums Galleries Scotland, said:
“This new leaflet from Fife Museums Forum is an excellent example of museums
partnering to raise their profile and attract new audiences. We’re pleased to have
supported this creative collaboration through our Forum Connections project, which
was made possible with The National Lottery Heritage Fund.
“As Scotland’s national development body for museums, we look forward to
continuing our work with Fife Museums Forum as we make progress towards our
shared goals of a more resilient and inclusive museum sector.”
