We are raisisng £7,500 to repair the Courthouse Clock and tower. Our clock has kept time for the people of Cromarty since it was made by John Ross of Tain in 1782. The clock was originally wound daily, but was converted to an electric mechanism in 1990. This icon of Cromarty has now stopped working and needs urgent work to restore both the clock and bell tower. We are raising funds to get the clock functioning again, stabilise the interior stairs in the clocktower, and provide ongoing servicing and maintenance for years to come.

2024 gets off to an exciting start for The Courthouse. We are delighted to welcome Eilidh Young as the new Manager and Curator.

In her first few weeks in the job Eilidh is planning to talk to as many people as she can. She will be meeting staff and volunteers as well as getting to grips with the complexities of managing our great museum. In her words: All ideas are good ideas, even if we can’t achieve them all. We will be putting some ambitious plans in place to give The Courthouse its rightful place in the community. Open to everyone, providing a place for history, culture, learning and above all fun.

A big thank you to everyone who joined us on Friday 29th September at Behind the Scenes in the Museum, for chat, drinks and refreshments – all 70 of you!

On display were recent acquisitions from the West Church, Roman coins found in the area by metal detectorists and which were granted to us from Treasure Trove – yes Romans were in the north of Scotland. There was plenty to eat, drink and lots of chat. We were very happy to celebrate a really successful year, visitor numbers, shop sales and donations where all better than we have seen for many years.

It was lovely to see so many old and new friends in the Courthouse. It was a great opportunity to catch up and (we hope) encourage you not to be strangers to our wee museum.

The only sad part of the evening was saying goodbye to two long serving Trustees, Mary Bowers (chair) and Brenda Monk (treasurer) – but we were able to do it in style with presentations and lots of love and appreciation.

And finally a big thank you to Susana for taking the photos below.

Join us on Friday 29th September 4:30 to 6:00 for chat, drinks and refreshments – the whole town and neigbourhood is invited!

See what happens in the museum, see what’s on display and get a peek at what isn’t on display! What would you like to see here? Can you help to make that happen? Museums always want to attract volunteers, but what skills do we need? What skills do you have to share? That and more ...

We are all delighted and very grateful to have been awarded funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. This is the second part of our 2-part funding bid that will allow us to employ a full-time museum manager / curator. The first part of the funding was confirmed in August, and comes from Museums Galleries Scotland. Together these two funding bodies will allow us to create a more resilient and vibrant museum, which will be a brilliant resource for our community and an attractive destination for visitors. If you would like to be part of this process please get in touch, and do keep an eye open for upcoming events in the Courthouse, starting with Behind the Scenes in the Museum on Friday 29th September … details to come!

In addition to all the other lovely shops in Cromarty, there are two or three options that might be overlooked: the Post Office has a comprehensive range of stationery, jigsaws and gifts, while both Hugh Miller’s Museum and the Courthouse shop carry yet more options including books (new and second hand) and a wide selection of locally sourced stock. We have it all here!
These pics show a small selection from the Courthouse shop.

More exciting developments: A Smartify way to visit the Courthouse!

The Courthouse is delighted to be one of six Highland museums taking part in a project with XpoNorth and Smartify – the world’s most popular museum app. Having a presence on Smartify gives the Courthouse a global audience, enables us to create curated tours and to showcase objects that aren’t normally on display. You can take a tour with authors David Alston and Nicole Bontemps exploring Cromarty’s historic links to the Transatlantic slave trade or browse through some of our collection dating from the bronze age to the twentyfirst century. You can be a virtual visitor to the Courthouse or use the app to enhance an in person visit.

“Highland history is now being showcased alongside a world-class
selection of museums, and is given an equal presence on the platform. The app really
champions small museums and values the stories they have to tell, and we’re excited about
sharing our heritage with the world.” (Freya Samuel, Highlanders’Museum)

Cromarty Courthouse is delighted and very grateful to have been awarded funding by Museums Galleries Scotland as part of their Museum Development Fund. This funding is the first part of a two-part funding application which will let us address three critical threats to our museum: financial resilience, succession planning and effective community engagement. If we are successful in securing the second part of our proposals then we plan to employ a full time museum manager/curator who will help us create a more resilient and vibrant museum, which will be a brilliant resource for our community and an attractive destination for visitors.
