She's coming together now.

The rough stages are starting to disappear and the character of the piece is really beginning to emerge. There's still plenty of work to do, but the form is finally starting to feel right.

Say hello to Zack, a little hedgehog I made a while ago that still makes me smile.

With less space to play with, every spine had to do more work, coming across as both delicate and sharp at the same time. Holding onto that alert, on the move hedgehog attitude, caught mid-stride and slightly wary, without losing it in all that fine detail was the real test at this scale.

Turns out wax and a British heatwave do not get along.

She's gone soft as butter today, more slug than sculpture. I touch her and she just slides off in a different direction. Wrestling with it more than working with it right now.

She's starting to come together now.

Still rough, still a way to go, but the shape's finally showing through the wax. Good day in the studio, hands played nice.

Fresh wax going on a new sculpture today.

This bit's slow going, layering it up before I can start finding the shape properly. Some days my hands cooperate more than others, but it's coming together.

Two figures on the go at once right now.

Working on both together is different, I keep catching on one what I've missed on the other, and they're starting to shape each other as I go.

Parkinson's means some days one gets more attention than the other, but both keep moving.

This wren is one of the smallest pieces I've made, and one of my favourites.

I've always loved wrens, that huge voice from something so small, always busy, never still long enough for a proper look. Getting that energy into something solid, the tilt of the tail, the puffed-up chest, was the real challenge.

Meet Spike, my hedgehog, finished a while back but still one I love picking up off the shelf.

I wanted to get the spines right without losing the personality underneath them, that little tucked-in, wary look hedgehogs have when they're not sure about you yet. Getting hundreds of tiny spines to read as soft and sharp at the same time took longer than I expected.

Fiddly detail work like this is where Parkinson's makes itself known the most, but it's also where I slow right down and enjoy the process.
