In the early 1900s, the Christmas displays of Penmaenmawr's shops were described in local newspapers. These narratives are a wonderful snapshot in time, showing us what was fashionable and the types of things local people and visitors who could afford these luxuries were buying or were aspiring to. We've turned a few of the descriptions into illustrations. This one is about Cambrian House, now Penmaenmawr Cards and Gifts, in 1901.
Messrs S. H. Roberts & Co, at Cambrian House, on the opposite corner, have a most elaborate side window. Here loops of red ribbon hang from festoons of green, while below on a bed of wadding are artificial flowers and other trimmings, and a very fine assortment of ladies’ scarves and other neck wear, making altogether a pretty picture. In another there are three beautiful ball dresses – one green, another heliotrope with black sequin, and another white. Here too are sables and furs, and a stuffed fox caught in the vicinity. A third window contains gentlemen’s gloves, ties, &c., nicely arranged.
