Today marks the anniversary of D-Day, one of the most significant moments in history. On 6 June 1944, thousands of brave servicemen crossed the English Channel to begin the liberation of Europe, facing unimaginable danger in the cause of freedom.

As we remember the courage, sacrifice, and determination of those who took part in Operation Overlord, we honour all who served and those who never returned home.

Thorpe Camp remembers their sacrifice. Their legacy lives on through our remembrance, ensuring that future generations never forget the price paid for peace and freedom.

"You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The hope and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you." -- General Dwight D. Eisenhower

83 Years On β€” We Remember The Dambusters

On the night of 16–17 May 1943, 133 young men of RAF 617 Squadron climbed aboard their Lancaster bombers and flew into one of the most dangerous and daring missions of the Second World War β€” Operation Chastise.

Flying at terrifyingly low altitude, in darkness, under intense enemy fire, they carried a revolutionary bouncing bomb designed to breach Germany’s great Ruhr dams and strike at the heart of the N**i war machine.

Many never came home.

Of the 19 aircraft that took part, 8 were lost, and 53 airmen gave their lives. These were not just names in history books β€” they were sons, brothers, husbands, and friends, many barely more than boys, who faced unimaginable danger with extraordinary courage.

Tonight, we remember their bravery, their sacrifice, and the bond of the crews who flew into history together.

Whatever history’s wider debates, the courage of those who answered the call cannot be forgotten.

83 years later, we still remember.
Lest We Forget.
