Discover the wonderful world of wool and the traditional skills inspired by one of Britain’s most important natural materials.

See wool transformed from fleece into something useful and beautiful, with demonstrations showcasing skills passed down through generations. Discover spinning, weaving and other traditional techniques, meet skilled craftspeople and learn more about wool’s important role in everyday life throughout history.

Wander through our 45-acre site, step inside rescued historic buildings, enjoy the autumn colours and make the most of a relaxed day out in the Chilterns.

Have you seen the size of our onions?!?

Grown in our Dig for Victory allotment by our marvellous volunteers, these whopping onions were part of our harvest display in Henton Mission Room. Along with lots of other homegrown produce, you can now buy them in the Museum shop.

(we hadn't got a banana for scale so we had to hold one of the onions instead)

Happy 50th Birthday to us!

Today marks 50 years of Chiltern Open Air Museum.

Since 1976, COAM has grown from an ambitious idea to save the Chilterns’ disappearing buildings into the Museum you know today — 45 acres of countryside filled with rescued historic buildings, working landscapes, traditional skills and countless stories.

Over those five decades, generations of visitors have stepped through our doors. Children who once came on school trips now return with children and grandchildren of their own. Thousands of volunteers, staff, craftspeople and supporters have helped care for the Museum and ensure that these special places and their stories survive.

There have been new buildings, new exhibitions, unforgettable events and plenty of changes along the way, but the purpose at the heart of COAM remains the same: to preserve the history of the Chilterns and bring it to life for everyone to enjoy.

Most importantly, COAM's story has always been about people.

So, on our 50th birthday, we'd like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has been part of our story.

Here's to the next 50 years!

We're going Wild About Wool on 10 & 11 October!

Enjoy a range of live demonstrations and hands-on activities, from knitting and spinning to felting and rug-making. Explore creative displays and chat with knowledgeable experts who’ll be happy to help with your crafting questions.

See the sheepdog in action rounding up our Oxford Down sheep.

Discover how wool garments helped soldiers survive the WW1 trenches and the roles women played in keeping the army supplied with handmade clothing.

There will be opportunities to try out different techniques (some activities may carry a small additional charge), as well as themed talks and demonstrations taking place across the weekend.

On Sunday there will be also be live music on the bandstand.
