Oriel Myrddin Gallery

Oriel Myrddin Gallery Contemporary art & applied art gallery in Carmarthen, west Wales // Oriel celf a chelf gymhwysol gyfoes yng Nghaerfyrddin, gorllewin Cymru

Oriel Myrddin Gallery is the main publicly funded art and craft gallery for the south-west Wales region, presenting an ambitious contemporary programme of temporary exhibitions. Located in a listed Victorian building in the centre of Carmarthen, the gallery is pivotal to the cultural energy and identity of the town. The egalitarian and aspirational principals of the organisation, that were laid do

wn on the official opening of the Carmarthen School of Art in 1892, were transferred to the Oriel Myrddin Trust on the opening of Oriel Myrddin Gallery in 1991. These core principals remain central to the gallery activity today; the foundation of which is to operate an inclusive, free art gallery engaging, challenging and enabling local and regional visitors of all ages, backgrounds and abilities to participate in the gallery’s exhibitions and education programmes. Oriel Myrddin Gallery is supported by The Arts Council of Wales

Oriel sy’n cael ei chyllido gan arian cyhoeddus yw Oriel Myrddin, a hi yw’r brif oriel o’i bath yn ne-orllewin Cymru. Mae gan yr oriel raglen gyfoes uchelgeisiol ac mae’n uchel ei pharch yn y sector. Cartref Oriel Myrddin yw adeilad rhestredig o Oes Fictoria ynghanol Caerfyrddin, ac mae gan yr oriel swyddogaeth hanfodol bwysig o ran egni diwylliannol a hunaniaeth y dref. Bu i Ymddiriedolaeth Oriel Myrddin, wrth agor Oriel Myrddin ym 1991, fabwysiadu egwyddorion egalitaraidd a dyheadol Ysgol Gelf Caerfyrddin, a oedd wedi eu datgan gyntaf yn ystod agoriad swyddogol yr Ysgol Gelf ym 1892. Mae’r egwyddorion sylfaenol hyn yn dal i fod yn elfen greiddiol o waith Oriel Myrddin: fe’i sefydlwyd i fod yn oriel gelf gynhwysol a heriol y gall ymwelwyr lleol a rhanbarthol o bob oedran, cefndir a gallu fynd iddi, yn ddi-dâl, i gyfranogi o arddangosfeydd a rhaglenni addysg yr oriel. Cynorthwyid Oriel Myrddin gan Gyngor Celfyddydau Cymru.

Can’t wait for this! Delighted to be collaborating with CWRW to bring you a creative evening of collage making on 4 February. Inspired by Oriel Myrddin’s relaunch exhibition GWRACH | WITCH - Clive Hicks Jenkins A Fairy Tale Retold, we’ll delve into what this iconic figure means in today’s world. Expect a fun mix of magical collage-making and mythically inspired Welsh tunes to spark your imagination!

Methu aros am hwn! Mae’n bleser gennym gydweithio â CWRW i ddod â noson greadigol i chi ar 4 Chwefror. Gan ddefnyddio portread Clive Hicks-Jenkins o’r Wrach yn Hansel a Gretel fel ein man cychwyn, byddwn yn archwilio beth mae’r cymeriad eiconig hwn yn ei olygu heddiw. Disgwyliwch gymysgedd hwyliog o greu collage hudol a miwsig Cymreig a ysbrydolwyd yn chwedlonol i danio’ch dychymyg!

A very warm welcome to Abby Poulson who has joined the OM team again! We’re delighted to have Abby leading on all our education and community work over the next few months. To celebrate her joining us, we sat down for a chat with Abby to hear about her life growing up in Carmarthenshire, her recent travels in Australia and some of her favourite places in and around the county. * We use the term global majority to acknowledge that people of Black, Asian, and other non-white ethnic backgrounds represent the majority of the world's population, challenging the Eurocentric view that they are a minority. We recognise that terminology evolves, and while we have chosen this as an umbrella term, we are committed to being respectful of how each individual wishes to be identified.
___
* Rydym yn defnyddio’r term mwyafrif byd-eang i gydnabod bod pobl o gefndiroedd ethnig Du, Asiaidd a phobl eraill nad ydynt yn wyn yn cynrychioli mwyafrif poblogaeth y byd, gan herio’r farn Ewro-ganolog eu bod yn lleiafrif. Rydym yn cydnabod bod terminoleg yn esblygu, ac er ein bod wedi dewis hwn fel term ymbarél, rydym wedi ymrwymo i barchu sut mae pob unigolyn yn dymuno cael ei adnabod.

What's this? Progress?!

We had an exciting and uplifting site visit to OM yesterday to check out how the work is coming along. Right now, the focus is on the King Street site, where contractors are busy shaping the gallery's new entrance, shop, and café area. The views from our future offices are amazing, overlooking the beautiful School of Art building. Upstairs, the old School of Art will house OM's new creative learning suite, while the existing gallery is getting some much-needed TLC—and our old shop is being transformed into a second gallery space! We can’t wait to share more updates and images soon!
