It’s and cold weather like this calls for a good cup of tea! ☕️

We’re excited to share that NAAFI tea is now available to purchase from the Museum Shop, just in time for Christmas. The tea is sourced from India and Africa to ensure a crisp, fresh flavour.

But what do we mean by NAAFI? 🤔

The NAAFI (Navy, Army, and Air Force Institutes) was established in 1920 to run canteens needed by the Armed Forces all over the world. Service personnel and their families would be very familiar with the NAAFI whether at home or overseas. Upstairs in the Museum was the Castle NAAFI canteen where we still have the original bar where many a soldier ordered a brew of NAAFI tea.

Please note, the Museum is currently only open on weekends from 10am-4pm. Feel free to pop in on either Saturday or Sunday to browse our stock.

Exciting news!

Next month, Rachel (our Learning and Events Assistant) will be starting another role as a Young Trustee of Kids in Museums.

As a Young Trustee, Rachel will be involved in strategic decision-making and future planning to support Kids in Museums' mission of working with museums, heritage sites and cultural organisations nationwide to make them more welcoming for children, young people and families.

"I feel incredibly lucky to act as a representative of young people within the sector. I'm also really excited to use the skills and experience I'll gain as a Young Trustee in my role at Cumbria's Museum of Military Life, especially considering the recent relaunch of our own Youth Group!" - Rachel.

It was great to welcome our Youth Group back to the Museum last night.

The evening began with a quiz and discussion about the current status of museums in the UK before honing in on some of the different areas of museum work. With a focus on collections, the group visited our research room, storerooms and workshop as part of a behind-the-scenes tour of the Museum before taking part in some object cleaning and conservation-based tasks.

Looking forward to seeing everyone again in the New Year to begin their youth project... Watch this space! 👀

Ridley Scott’s ‘Napoleon’ officially releases in cinemas tomorrow... The film depicts Napoleon's rise to power through the lens of his addictive and volatile relationship with Empress Joséphine.

Did you know ❓

In the Museum, we have the 34e Régiment d'Infanterie’s mace and drums that were seized by the 34th Cumberland Regiment during the Battle of Arroyo dos Molinos during the Peninsular War. It is said that these very drums have been touched by Napoleon himself.

Why not visit the Museum and see the drums before you catch the film? 🥁

Also know as ‘De Ireby’s Tower’, the Outer Gatehouse of the Castle has fulfilled many purposes over the years, including that of an exchequer and later military barracks.🏰

The oldest parts of the building likely date back to the 1160s, though extensive building work took place in the late 14th century. Today it still makes quite the statement.

As part of Kids in Museums , we welcomed Kingmoor Junior School to the Museum to become History detectives 🕵️

Pupils worked together using primary and secondary sources as evidence to discover more about the life of a soldier and roles of women during the First World War.

Well done 6T! Or should we say, 6th Battalion of the Kingmoor Regiment… 🫡

in 1916, the Battle of the Somme ended. For many in Britain, the battle remains the most painful and infamous episode of the First World War. 16 of the Border Regiment’s battalions took part.

From the War Diary of the 11th Border Regiment:

‘Some men of The Border Regiment got up to and inside the German wire and occupied shells holes, but could not get no further and struggled back after dark. During the day and up till 10p.m., the devoted stretch-bearers were continuously going over the top attending to and bringing the wounded.’

If you’re keen to learn more about the Regiment’s involvement in the Great War, we recommend reading ‘The Border Regiment in the Great War’ by H. C. Wylly, available to purchase from our Shop: https://bit.ly/3PPENHT
