You may remember the good news at the end of last year that our Fine & Decorative Arts Curator Melanie Gardner was named in the New Year Honour List 2024 to receive a British Empire Medal (BEM) for services to art and culture in Cumbria.

Well, last month she was presented with her medal by HM Lord-Lieutenant of Cumbria, Mr. Alexander Scott at an investiture ceremony in the wonderful setting of Muncaster Castle.

I know we congratulated her in December, but we think she deserves some more. ๐Ÿ‘

Just a heads up that the Roman Frontier Gallery will be closed Thursday 7 December and Friday 8 December so we can do some important work on the collections.

But don't fret, there's still plenty of Roman history on display. There's Occupation: Cumbria Under Roman Rule upstairs on the Border Galleries and of course current exhibition Digging Deeper: Uncovering Roman Carlisle.

Psst. Schools. Have you heard? We're now bringing the museum to you. ๐Ÿ›๐Ÿ‘‰

As you'll probably be aware, we're closing from 24 December until summer 2024 for some exciting redevelopment work. Since September, our Learning team have been out and about across Cumbria delivering our popular workshops as outreach. And it's fair to say they've gone down a treat. Here's what some schools have said:

๐Ÿ’ฌโ€œWe had multiple children saying it was the best day ever! They came back buzzing and we sat and focussed on everything we had learnt.โ€

๐Ÿ’ฌโ€œThe delivery was superb and the resources excellent. Such enthusiasm from Liana. She was so well organised and really motivated the children. The children loved it. They were actively engaged throughout. I would have her back in a heartbeat."

You can find out more about our outreach programme here:
https://tullie.org.uk/get-involved/schools/

And if you want to be the first to hear about new outreach sessions, and maybe even get some exclusive discounts sign up to our schools' newsletter here:

If you're interested in booking for the Spring term, please email Liana at [email protected]

Perhaps this is how things might've looked to a fly, bird or Roman-Carlislian ghost at the bathhouse dig site earlier in the year.

If you visit Digging Deeper: Uncovering Roman Carlisle, you can sit down and watch the rest of this drone footage very kindly provided for us by Grahame Johnston and pretend to be a bird or a Roman spirit fruitlessly suggesting they dig 'a little to the left'.

It's worth noting, even for the most ardent Scrooge sympathisers among you, that Santa's visit to the museum on the next two weekends also means two more days to see the exhibition. That's right, we'll be open Sundays 3 and 10 December.

We're really happy to share that Uncovering Roman Carlisle won the Society for Museum Archaeology award for 'Engagement and/or Collaboration project' earlier this month.

There's lots we could say about the project, but in this instance we'll let the award judges do the talking.

โ€œA great community engagement project which reached lots of people and clearly provided fun, memorable experiencesโ€ฆ"

"It is a clear model for how to utilise such archaeological and museum resources to carefully engage with the local, and often hard to reach, communities, and instil elements of pride in local heritage."

High praise indeed.

Congratulations also to Cumberland Council, Wardell Armstrong LLP, Carlisle Cricket CLUB and the wonderful volunteers that took part throughout.

It's Lancashire Day! ๐ŸŒน

In Cumbria we share a lot in common with our neighbour to the south. We've even had some of the same land within our respective boundaries at different times.

Like the subject of this painting entitled 'Esthwaite Water, Lancashire' by Wigton artist William Henry Hoodless (1841โ€“1902).

Esthwaite Water is situated in the Lake District between Coniston and Windermere. Historically, it was part of Lancashire (North of the Sands) until local government reorganisation in 1974 placed it within the newly created county of Cumbria.

21/11/2023

We're coming to you with an important public service announcement. We're 130 this month, and in need of a few home improvements.

As part of our phased redevelopment programme, Project Tullie, over the next few years we're going to be making some exciting improvements to the museum. We're really pleased to have funding to start the next phase (with the first being the wonderful Costume Collection). To enable the building work to happen, we'll need to close from 24 December to summer 2024.

We know this news might come as a surprise to some of you and we appreciate it might seem like short notice, but we needed to wait to announce this until we knew work could get started. Rest assured we have been busy for years behind the scenes planning and consulting, and can't wait to share more details and visuals with you soon.

Once this stage of redevelopment is completed, we'll have a revitalised entrance and atrium space, new retail offer, and a brand-new ground floor gallery dedicated to our Great Border City. Say goodbye to the honeycomb tile ceiling and slightly temperamental red doors, we'll be back with a fresh and much more accessible new look.

Luckily, there's still time to get your Tullie fix. We're extending the Digging Deeper exhibition until Saturday 23 December and we have two weekends of Christmas fun planned.

If you're a Tullie Member or have paid for admission recently, we'll be offering to extend all annual purchases to include our closure period.

We will be keeping you all updated on the progress and plans and absolutely do not intend to go quietly into closure.

If you have any questions, general words of excitement, concerns, or thoughts, please do get in touch with us in whatever way suits you best. Learn more about the project here: https://tullie.org.uk/project-tullie/

Regular groups that meet at Tullie should have already heard from us, but if you have any further questions please feel free to reach out.

We can't wait to welcome you all back to the revitalised spaces in our 131st year!

This latest development has been made possible with funding by the UK Government, including support from the UK Governmentโ€™s Townโ€™s Fund and Future High Streets Fund.

There's a brand new display in the Tullie gardens. ๐ŸŒฟ๐ŸŒฟ

This one is a lovely document of some of the work that happens in our Secret Garden. Sometimes it is a sanctuary for people seeking asylum in the area and those that otherwise wouldn't have access to a safe, green space. In our Secret Garden Clubs we've given people the chance to be together, have fun, take in nature and be creative.

Plants from the Secret Garden and the museum's herbaria collection served as inspiration for the creative photography in this display and a zine documenting the group's experience.

A big thank you to those who helped support the project: Chuck Whitehead, Julia Parks, Bamba Gaye and Multicultural Cumbria .

This work has been part of the Once Upon A Planet project, supported by the Esmรฉe Fairbairn Collections Fund via Museums Association. Additional support from Newcastle Building Society.

On this day in 1882 Wyndham Lewis was born. He is most famous for co-founding vorticism which was a modernist art movement that favoured a geometric style and bold lines.

We are lucky enough to have the portrait of Lewis' wife Anne, painted in their home at Notting Hill Gate in London. You can see this on the stairs of Old Tullie House.

Some absolute gold from the Bronze Age is coming to Cumbria very soon. โœจ

With our friends at The Beacon Museum, Whitehaven, we are very excited to have jointly acquired a Bronze Age treasure as stunning as it is significant.

The treasure in question is a gold arm ring, thought to date 900-700 BC, found by a local detectorist in west Cumbria in 2019. A first for the area, it was recorded through the Portable Antiquities Scheme and acquired under the Treasure Act 1996 by Tullie and The Beacon.

The arm ring will go on display at The Beacon first from Saturday 18 November until June 2024.

Funding support for this exciting acquisition comes from the Art Fund, Arts Council England/V&A Purchase Grant Fund, Cumberland Council, and the Cumberland and Westmorland Antiquarian and Archaeological Society.

It's not just our birthday this week, it's Art Fund's too!

Since 1903, Art Fund has been helping ensure that great works of art and important historical objects are kept for the people.

In their 120-year history, Art Fund has helped secure important artworks for institutions throughout the country from the likes of Michelangelo, da Vinci, and Botticelli. We don't quite have anything of that magnitude (yet ๐Ÿ‘€) but there are some incredible items we've been able to add to the collection with Art Fund's invaluable support.

Like these pictured.

Study of a woman, possibly Olive Maxse, 1895, by Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898). Bequeathed by Herbert Kennard with Art Fund support.

We are officially 130 years old today! ๐Ÿฐ

Here's a photo from 131 years ago to celebrate. It shows six-time Mayor of Carlisle, Sir Benjamin Scott laying the foundation stone for Tullie House's extension on 26 May 1892. The ceremony was attended by civic dignitaries and neighbouring mayors, as well as a crowd of local people (there's some excellent facial hair on display and we highly recommend having a zoom in).

Also please enjoy this carved wooden panel, which you'll probably have spotted, commemorating the official opening on 8 November 1893 by then-Mayor James Atkinson Wheatley.

Here's to 130 more years! (We will accept cake emojis in lieu of actual cake) ๐Ÿฐ
