After decades of dedication, Margaret and Richard from Valleys Kids - Plant Y Cymoedd are officially retiring! 👏

From founding the Penygraig Basement Project in 1977 to expanding Valleys Kids into a force for community change, they have dedicated their careers to supporting and empowering individuals, families, and communities through understanding and responding to local needs.

Valleys Kids has been a valued Artes Mundi partner over the years, and we are incredibly grateful for Margaret and Richard's support.

We wish them a happy and well-earned retirement! 💛

Thank you to community artists Rebecca Wyn Kelly and Menna Buss, responsible for the pictured AM10 collaboration with Valleys Kids.

Ar ôl degawdau o ymroddiad, mae Margaret a Richard o Valleys Kids yn ymddeol yn swyddogol! 👏

O sefydlu Prosiect Islawr Pen-y-graig yn 1977 i ehangu Valleys Kids i rym ar gyfer newid cymunedol, maent wedi ymroi eu gyrfaoedd i gefnogi a grymuso unigolion, teuluoedd, a chymunedau trwy ddeall ac ymateb i anghenion lleol.

Mae Valleys Kids wedi bod yn bartner gwerthfawr i Artes Mundi dros y blynyddoedd, ac rydym yn hynod ddiolchgar am gefnogaeth Margaret a Richard.

Dymunwn ymddeoliad hapus a haeddiannol iddynt! 💛

Hannan Jones' Cosmotechnic Templum is available to view online until 14 March 2025 ✨
from the A Frontier in Depth trilogy

Premiered as part of a soft launch in January, under the deity Janus—the Roman god of beginnings, endings, transitions and portals—often depicted with two faces, one looking to the past and one to the future, a nod to the flow of the order of events experienced as sequence, is one part of a film trilogy by Hannan Jones.

What are the possibilities when we engage in the unlimited non-linear potentiality of time, its circularity, countless realities and multiple cosmologies.

Commissioned for Perspective(s), in partnership with Artes Mundi, National Roman Legion Museum, Arts Council Wales and Amgueddfa Cymru.

Commemorating Malcolm X on the centenary of his birth and 60th anniversary of his assassination, ‘1965: Malcolm in the Winter: A Translation Exercise’ marks Theaster Gates’s first contact with the archive of late Japanese journalist Ei Nagata and his partner Haruhi Ish*tani. Through a series of architectural interventions, large-scale installations, archival works and new film works, Gates engages with the methods of care and preservation nurtured in Japanese philosophy and craftsmanship, drawing upon them as a framework to consider the role of art and aesthetics in shaping political, ideological and cultural legacies.

Congratulations to AM8 alumni artist Otobong Nkanga, who has been selected for the Helsinki Biennial 2025 🥳

The theme of the third edition, Shelter, is inspired by Vallisaari’s island habitat. Surrounded by sea, this rich ecosystem has been preserved from human habitation for decades, providing a perfect shelter for diverse life forms to flourish. This undisturbed refuge also offers visitors a rare opportunity to imagine what unfolds when humans step back and non-human actors take prominence.

The third edition takes place from 8 June – 21 September 2025.

The third edition of Helsinki Biennial will showcase the work of around 35 artists and artist groups across three distinct venues this summer: Vallisaari Island, Esplanade Park, and HAM Helsinki Art Museum. Our Story

Artes Mundi is an internationally focused arts organisation that identifies, recognises and supports contemporary visual artists who engage with the human condition, social reality and lived experience.

Artes Mundi is Latin for ‘arts of the world’, reflecting the international focus of this Wales-based arts charity whose mission is:

"To bring exceptional and challenging international art to Wales and to generate unique opportunities for individuals and local communities to engage creatively with the urgent issues of our time".
