We're delighted to share the work of Angela Davies, who received 3 one-to-one sessions with curator, Marie-Anne McQuay as part of our Studio Sessions.

"In May I also had the opportunity to go on a research trip to Japan while my film was being shown at the Mori Art Museum. Now back in the studio I’m unravelling this experience through drawing and developing a material inquiry, and expanding the body of work created as part of my recent solo show at Plas Glyn y Weddw. Framed around ecological and place-based contexts of salt my work is evolving into:
- sculptural investigations and testing out a new film installation
- development of a new analogue film (thanks to Aberystwyth Film Lab)
- An exhibition publication

Sincere thanks to Artes Mundi and Marie-Anne McQuay for providing a framework for mentorship."

Rydym wrth ein bodd yn rhannu gwaith Angela Davies, a gafodd 3 sesiwn un-i-un gyda'r curadur, Marie-Anne McQuay fel rhan o'n Sesiynau Stiwdio.

"Ym mis Mai, cefais gyfle hefyd i fynd ar daith ymchwil i Japan tra oedd fy ffilm yn cael ei harddangos yn Amgueddfa Gelf Mori. Bellach rwyf yn ôl yn y stiwdio ac rwy’n myfyrio ar y profiad drwy dynnu lluniau a datblygu ymchwiliad perthnasol, ac ehangu’r corff o waith a gafodd ei greu fel rhan o’m harddangosfa unigol ddiweddar ym Mhlas Glyn y Weddw. Mae fy ngwaith wedi'i fframio o amgylch cyd-destunau sy’n seiliedig ar leoedd ac ecoleg halen, ac yn esblygu’n:
- ymchwiliadau cerfluniol a phrofi gosodiad ffilm newydd
- datblygu ffilm analog newydd (diolch i Labordy Ffilm Aberystwyth)
- Cyhoeddiad arddangosfa

Diolch o galon i Artes Mundi a Marie-Anne McQuay am roi fframwaith ar gyfer mentora.

We are excited to share the work of the artists who took part in our Studio Sessions! The next artist is Lal Davies, who received 3 one-to-one sessions with Nigel Prince.

"The Studio Sessions were a really valuable opportunity to spend time with Nigel Prince from Artes Mundi looking at directions my film/visual art/text practice had taken since encountering him previously. We also looked at new work in progress. [...] As well as these insightful discussions, we talked about the wider context and realities of being a working artist. Because of Nigel’s generosity and insight, I felt strengthened in continuing to make new work to continue feeding into commissions."

Rydym yn gyffrous i rannu gwaith yr artistiaid a gymerodd ran yn ein Sesiynau Stiwdio! Yr artist nesaf yw Lal Davies, a gafodd 3 sesiwn un-i-un gyda Nigel Prince.

"Roedd y Sesiynau Stiwdio yn gyfle gwerthfawr iawn i dreulio amser gyda Nigel Prince o Artes Mundi, yn edrych ar y cyfeiriad y mae fy ngwaith ffilm/celf weledol/testun wedi mynd iddo ers cwrdd ag ef o’r blaen. Fe wnaethom ni edrych hefyd ar waith newydd sydd ar y gweill. [...] Yn ogystal â’r trafodaethau craff hyn, buom yn siarad am gyd-destun ehangach a realiti gweithio fel artist. Oherwydd haelioni a dealltwriaeth Nigel, roeddwn i’n teimlo’n gryfach i barhau i wneud gwaith newydd er mwyn cyfrannu at gomisiynau."

We are excited to share the work of the artists who took part in our Studio Sessions! The next artist is Lily Tiger, who received 3 one-to-one sessions with Sarah Glennie.

"During the sessions, we discussed ways of strengthening the content and format of my online portfolio for future opportunities. She also shared alternative ways of receiving further education and introduced me to many other artists working in similarly cross-disciplinary and collaborative ways. The most beneficial aspect of the sessions was the encouragement to have more confidence in my practice, and feel proud of what I've achieved to date."

"Yn ystod y sesiynau, buom yn trafod ffyrdd o gryfhau cynnwys a fformat fy mhortffolio ar-lein er mwyn cael cyfleoedd yn y dyfodol. Hefyd, rhannodd hi ffyrdd amgen o dderbyn addysg bellach a’m cyflwyno i lawer o artistiaid eraill sy’n gweithio mewn ffyrdd yr un mor drawsddisgyblaethol a chydweithredol. Agwedd fwyaf buddiol y sesiynau oedd yr anogaeth i gael mwy o hyder yn fy ngwaith, a theimlo’n falch o’r hyn rydw i wedi’i gyflawni hyd yma."

We are delighted to share the work of the artists who took part in our Studio Sessions! The next artist is Holly Slingsby, who received 3 one-to-one sessions with curator, Marie Hélène Pereira.

"My Studio Sessions with Marie Hélène Pereira were really beneficial. Firstly, it's been helpful to discuss my practice with a curator who was previously unfamiliar with it. Secondly, Marie Helene’s international perspective gave such richness to our conversations.

As well as dialogue around existing work, we've been talking about new work I'm developing on Shrine Madonnas. I've also recently made a new performance in London, so we discussed the creation and reception of that."

"Roedd fy Sesiynau Stiwdio gyda Marie Hélène Pereira yn fuddiol iawn. Yn gyntaf, defnyddiol oedd trafod fy ngwaith gyda churadur a oedd yn anghyfarwydd â fy ngwaith cyn hynny. Yn ail, rhoddodd persbectif rhyngwladol Marie Hélène gymaint o gyfoeth i’n sgyrsiau.

Yn ogystal â deialog am y gwaith presennol, rydym ni wedi siarad am waith newydd rydw i wrthi’n ei ddatblygu ar gerfluniau o'r Forwyn Fair. Rydw i hefyd wedi gwneud perfformiad newydd yn Llundain yn ddiweddar, felly fe wnaethon ni drafod creu hynny a sut cafodd y perfformiad ei dderbyn."

We are delighted to share the work of the artists who took part in our Studio Sessions! The next artist is Grant Lambie, who received 3 one-to-one sessions with artist, Sawangwongse Yawnghwe.

"We were well linked to each other, with a major similarity of the oppression, of Sawang the Dutch Empire and myself, the closing chapters of the British Empire. Discussed areas of artistic practice, this included, background colour, sizing the work, different methods of collage and introduction of artists that I had not considered researching. Reflecting/feedback at the next session."

Trafodwyd meysydd ymarfer artistig, gan gynnwys lliw cefndir, maint y gwaith, gwahanol ddulliau o ludwaith a chyflwyniad i artistiaid nad oeddwn i wedi ystyried ymchwilio iddynt. We are excited to share the work of the artists who took part in our Studio Sessions! The next artist is Cecile Johnson Soliz, who received 3 one-to-one sessions with Ceri Hand.

"In the studio I’m making clusters of small sculptures that live on shelves with partner drawings. The work is shaped by encounters gathered over decades: Yampara textiles worn across Bolivian mountains, geometric patterns painted onto mud compounds in northern Ghana, hand-painted signs, Ankara fabrics drying on fences in Senegal, Welsh blankets, chimney pots and improvised tools adapted to fit the job. I am interested in the ingenuity embedded in everyday objects and the intelligence held in people’s hands. "

"Yn y stiwdio, rydw i’n creu clystyrau o gerfluniau bach sy’n byw ar silffoedd gyda lluniadau partner. Mae’r gwaith yn cael ei siapio gan gyfarfyddiadau a gasglwyd dros ddegawdau: Tecstiliau Yampara sy’n cael eu gwisgo ar fynyddoedd Bolivia, patrymau geometrig wedi’u paentio ar gyfansoddion llaid yng ngogledd Ghana, arwyddion wedi’u peintio â llaw, ffabrigau Ankara yn sychu ar ffensys yn Senegal, carthenni Cymreig, potiau simnai ac offer byrfyfyr wedi’u haddasu i gyd-fynd â’r gwaith. Mae gennyf ddiddordeb yn y dyfeisgarwch sydd wedi’i wreiddio mewn gwrthrychau bob dydd, a’r deallusrwydd sydd yn nwylo pobl."

We are delighted to share the work of the artists who took part in our Studio Sessions! The first artist is Alana Tyson, who received 3 one-to-one sessions with curator, Ann Fiona Jones.

"Sometimes you need an outside perspective to help connect the dots. With Ann's encouragement, I realized that what I thought was a scattered sum of ideas is a deeply connected body of work. I’m currently exploring themes of validation and identity, playing with underlying tensions between the grotesque and the beautiful.

Feeling incredibly grateful for the push to put myself back out there. Back to the studio!"
