Museum of Army Music

Museum of Army Music The Museum of Army Music captures the history and traditions of music and musicians in the British Army from its origins to the present day.

In 2021 the Museum of Army Music at Kneller Hall closed its doors. The collection is now based at RCAM Headquarters at Gibraltar Barracks, Minley. We are currently exploring new museum options and other ways to share the collection. We are still accepting donations to the collection and are open by appointment for research enquiries. It has been a summer of firsts and lasts for us at the museum. At the beginning of the summer we were thrilled to welcome our first official researcher to the museum store and archive.

Mike Purton runs Mike Purton Recordings (https://www.mikepurtonrecording.com/) bringing unfairly forgotten and overlooked music to life with the finest musicians and highest production values. Mike also has an illustrious musical career, including playing principal horn with the Halle Orchestra.

Mike came to look through our collection of manuscript music and found some interesting pieces.

We are now open for research visits by appointment. We are on site on Thursdays throughout the year. If you would like to come and view the collection please contact us on [email protected].

We are thrilled to be one of the first cohort to be awarded a Association of Independent Museums' Museum Fundamentals grant.

We will be using our grant to build our knowledge of items in our collection from 1970 to the present day. To do this we are building a framework of questions to make sure we can collect information about how collection items were made and used as well as recording the experiences of the item owners and users. This will allow us to create interpretation that goes from dry one line descriptions to a more engaging text which gives the museum visitor or researcher a better understanding of the item and the people connected with it. The project will also identify gaps in our collection and guide us what to collect in the future.

We are working on our research and development phase at the moment but will be asking for people to help us test our question framework later in the year so watch this space!

Congratulations to all the other grant recipients and a big thank you to the Association of Independent Museums for supporting this project!

🎶 Explore the Heritage of Army Music at Minley! 🎺

Our once-blank corridor at Kneller Wing has been transformed into an eye-catching timeline display telling the story of Army music: from ancient battlefield signals to today's training at the School. With over 40 panels drawing on the museum’s archive (plus interactive QR codes linking to music and video!), it’s a real celebration of the Corps' heritage.

A huge thanks to everyone who made this possible. If you’re on site at Gibraltar Barracks pop down to the Higher Training Wing and take a moment to walk the corridor—we hope you like it!
Not able to visit? You can see a potted version in the newly updated ‘history’ section of the museum website here: https://museumofarmymusic.com/our-history/

As curators, we don’t often get to see army musicians in action as much as we would like — so it was a real treat to attend Trooping the Colour: the Major General's Review on Saturday 31st May at Horse Guards Parade, London.

A huge thank you to our Royal Corps of Army Music colleagues for the invitation and for taking the time to explain the different aspects of the event. It was an impressive display and the sunshine added an extra sparkle to the day!

Experiencing it all first-hand really helps us understand the context in which the collection is used and provides an insight into the experience of our army musicians.

Good luck to everyone taking part in the Colonel’s Review this weekend and His Majesty The King’s Birthday Parade on Saturday 14th June 🎺🐴

Celebrating with a ✨ spotlight on Ena Forster – An outstanding career in Army Music 🎶

Born in Sussex, Ena dedicated her life to music and service. A talented oboe player from childhood, she joined the Women’s Royal Army Corps (WRAC) Band in 1971, where she started off playing cymbals in the marching band.

Ena’s musical ability saw her gain a place at Kneller Hall in the only the second year that women were permitted to study there. She excelled, winning three major awards:
🏅 Cousins Memorial Medal – Best instrumentalist of the year
🏅 Worshipful Company of Musicians’ Medal – Runner-up for best all-round pupil
🏅 First Prize for Harmony

Her success continued as she returned to Kneller Hall in 1981 for the prestigious Bandmasters Course, graduating in 1983 with the Director’s Prize for Conducting and runner-up for the highest marks in the Ministry of Defence exams.

In 1984, Ena became Director of Music for the WRAC Band, leading them on tours across the UK and abroad, including Hong Kong, Cyprus, and Jersey. She received the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in 1987 and, in 1988, became the first female Director of Music to achieve her PSM.

After the WRAC Band was disbanded in 1992, Ena transitioned to a new career in army administration, where she became a highly respected member of staff. She retired in 1998 and continued sharing her love of music through church performances and community concerts.

Following Ena’s passing in March 2018, her family kindly donated many items from her army music career to the museum. We are proud to preserve her legacy and hope to share her story—and the story of the WRAC Band—more fully in the future.

Listening to the Experts!
Our collection may be in store but we are always looking for ways to find out more about it and ensure that we have got things right. Luckily being co-located with the Corps HQ means we have lots of advice on hand so who better to help us perfect our uniform knowledge than the musicians who have worn them? 🥁 Here you can see Curator Dani having a lively discussion with WO2 (BM) Simon Lindley about detailed items from our collection.

Music is always the perfect soundtrack for love and romance. This bride and groom were married in the chapel at Kneller Hall and what better Guard of Honour than the Kneller Hall Trumpeters! Sadly we do not know who they are so if anyone does we would love to know! Happy Valentines Day all!
