Founded in 1872, the Royal School of Needlework (RSN) is the international centre of excellence for the art of hand embroidery. For over 150 years, the RSN has preserved and championed embroidery through education, conservation and some of the most prestigious embroidery commissions in the world.

This talk will explore the history of the RSN, from its beginnings to its role today as a globally recognised charity based at Hampton Court Palace. Along the way, you'll discover how embroidery has evolved, the people who have shaped the organisation, and how the RSN continues to keep these remarkable skills alive.

The talk will also look to the future, exploring how the RSN is reaching new audiences through education, digital learning and creative partnerships, ensuring that hand embroidery remains relevant and accessible for generations to come.

We are particularly excited that this event marks the first partnership between the Royal School of Needlework and Buxton Crescent Heritage Trust, and we look forward to sharing the RSN's story in such a beautiful and historic setting.

Join Sean Cooney, a powerful voice in British folk music and theatre and three-time BBC Radio 2 Folk Award winner with The Young’uns, for a fascinating mix of talk and live performance.

Sean explores the Peterloo Massacre of 1819 through his musical odyssey Peter’s Field, drawing on historic first-hand accounts to tell the story of the 60,000 peaceful pro-democracy demonstrators who gathered in Manchester and were violently dispersed by cavalry.

As part of the Buxton Georgian Festival, join Tom, Senior Conservation Adviser for Northern England at The Georgian Group, for a fascinating illustrated talk exploring the rich variety of Georgian architecture across the North West.

From grand townhouses and elegant civic buildings to rural cottages and industrial heritage, Tom will share real-life conservation case studies and the everyday challenges of protecting some of our most treasured Georgian places. It’s a brilliant opportunity to learn more about the history, craftsmanship and care that goes into preserving our architectural heritage.

✨ Step back in time with Anna Seward with Discover Buxton – the Georgian poet, social commentator, and fiercely independent woman described as “Dr Darwin in petticoats.”

Anna Seward first visited Buxton in 1793 to take the renowned ‘Buxton cure.’ Suffering from rheumatism, she sought the health-giving properties of the spa waters. During her stays at the newly built Crescent, she divided her time between water treatments, daily walks, and lively conversations with fellow guests.

From literary triumphs to witty social observations, Seward’s sharp intellect and candid tales reveal the struggles and triumphs of a woman determined to live on her own terms.

In August 1825, Anne Lister (yes, Gentleman Jack fans!) visited Buxton with her aunt, staying seven weeks at the Great Hotel. Her detailed diaries describe everything from spa baths to dinners of “good trout and excellent mutton” – and even her aunt’s consultation with Mr Flint, the local apothecary:

📝 “A very vulgar man but my aunt was pleased we had sent for him and we hope he will do her good. He had just sent her an aperient draught and will order her bath tomorrow. She is not to stay [in] more than 6 minutes.”
