We are delighted to share the news that The chairman of the board of trustees at The Fusilier Museum, Bury and Colonel Heritage for the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers has been awarded an OBE (officer of the Order of the British Empire) in the New Years Honours List.
The honour has been awarded for services to museums and to the community in Bury, Greater Manchester.
Brian who served with the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers for many years became Chairman of the Board of Trustees in 1999 and has since led the museum through several periods of change.
Brian was fundamental in the fundraising effort for the museum when it moved from its original location in the former Wellington Barracks to its current location in the town centre in 2009. He has since seen the museum grow from strength to strength and become recognised as a leading visitor attraction in Bury and the wider field of military history.

Over the years he has also over secured substantial funding in excess of ยฃ7m from various external bodies for building works and temporary exhibitions the most recent being Art of War which opened in November this year.

Huge congratulations Brian โ€“ we are immensely proud of you and everything you have achieved for our museum.

The featured curiosity for December is a souvenir tin from Queen Victoria. In the spirit of Christmas in 1899, these tins were dispatched to troops engaged in the Boer War in South Africa. The thoughtful concept behind these tins was to ensure that every soldier, irrespective of rank, received a tin adorned with Queen Victoria's visage along with a Happy New Year greeting, containing a half pound of chocolate. Queen Victoria personally covered the costs of these tins, which were cleverly designed with rounded corners for easy storage in soldiers' knapsacks. Highly favoured by the troops, these tins were often retained as cherished mementos of the war. You can see this item on display at the museum in the Quartermasters store!

Huge thanks to the Freemasons for their kind donation of ยฃ2,000 to go towards the refurbishment of the basement as a space dedicated for use by local community groups. Here is Edward Beaman on behalf of 2nd Principal of Derby Chapter 1055 presenting museum trustee Karan Lee with the cheque a few weeks ago.

We are still fundraising for the project so if anybody would like to get involved or raise funds on our behalf we would love to here from you. Simply send us a DM or comment below and we will be in touch.

Our new exhibition Art of War includes the stories of six artists connected to the regiment over the years. The idea for the exhibition actually came from an enquiry we received a few years ago and we discovered that the famous artist Edmund Van Someren was actually a Lancashire Fusilier. There are several pieces of Van Someren's on display as well as Collinson Morley, Terrance Cuneo and more modern day artists Siobhan Lewis, Philip Pearson and David Rowlands.

Find out all about them in our online guide or visit the exhibition which is on display until March 2024.

November's curiosity of the month is a leaflet from an Arts & Craft Exhibition held by the 2nd Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers at Gough Barracks Ferozepore, India. In a crazy coincidence the exhibition took place on Wednesday 15th of November 1933 exactly 90 years later to the day we launched our very own art exhibition, Art of War!

Enjoy a visit to the museum to see Art of War and view artworks by renowned artists such as Terrance Cuneo, Edmund van Someren and David Rowlands.

Last night saw the official opening of our new exhibition Art of War. Huge thanks to everyone that came along to the event and made it so special.

Thanks to Lord-Lieutenant Diane Hawkins for officially opening the exhibition and Mayor Bury Cllr Sandra Warmsley for attending.

Special thanks to all the artists involved in the project - especially David Rowlands for his contribution to the film and exhibition as well as making the long journey to be part of the event last night.

Thanks to Olive's Kitchen for providing the delicious canapes and fizz throughout the event.

And finally Arts Council England for funding the exhibition and making our concept a reality.
