Moyse's Hall has worked with multiple artists to realise and enhance our spaces for 'Edmund and the Great Heathen Army'.

Gloria Notarangelo’s enchanting Edmund piece captured the curatorial team at Moyse’s Hall when she posted it up to her thousands of followers on Instagram. The stars aligned and she agreed to lend it to us for the summer for ‘Edmund and the Great Heathen Army’. The ethereal quality means we have placed it at the end of our King in life, just before ‘Saint’ Edmund rises in the Great Hall.

The artist’s description:
‘This circular canvas was created to both mirror medieval medallions and compress the image into a focused narrative.
The central figure depicts St Edmund atop his horse after his defeat by the Danes. He is accompanied by ravens and advancing solemnly through woodland on his last journey, possibly unaware that he has died.
He is also flanked by a great wolf that was said to have protected Edmund's head after his death.’

Gloria Notarangelo is an established professional Nordic and Celtic freehand tattoo artist and published illustrator based in Central London at Old World Remains Studio. Her most recent work can be seen in Bloomsbury Publishing UK's beautiful publication, 'Vikings: Culture of Discovery and Plunder' (2026).

Her works are inspired by both historical art and archaeological finds.

A huge thank you to Father Geoffrey Scott for visiting 'Edmund and the Great Heathen Army'.
Father Scott instigated the loan of the Reliquary of St Robert which contains a series of relics attributed to Thomas Becket, Christ, Mary, Elijah, and more.
The stunning artefact is owned by Douai Abbey, where Ft Scott was Abbot until retiring.
It was on long-term display at the V&A who have kindly relinquished it for a summer to go near its most likely site of creation, the Abbey of Saint Edmund.

Thank you Father Scott, Douai Abbey, the Catholic Church, and V&A, in making this special part of our display possible, from all at West Suffolk Heritage Service.

The Reliquary can be viewed now and over the summer before its return.

The building frames the 'Edmund and the Great Heathen Army' exhibition.

12th Century windows, Tudor and Victorian beams, an Early Modern Goal door, and Tudor brick archways. All playing their part in adding drama, shadows, and tones.

The 12th Century windows are second phase for Moyse's Hall and around 1180/1190, elsewhere archways predate these by half a century. The gaol door is believed Tudor, doctored a little later to secure the then-cellblock, with locks all on one side. The beams are a mix of Tudor and Victorian, today flirting with an Anglo-Saxon hall.

These are part of the collection in their own right and the West Suffolk teams at Heritage, Property Services and Facilities Management keep them safe and protected.
