Bursledon Windmill was built in 1813 to replace an earlier post mill that dated back to 1766. The constuction of the current mill was made possible when Phoebe Langtry asked the Bishop for a grant of 30 poles of land (approximately 750 square metres) ‘on top of the free hill in Bursledon upon which lately stood a windmill’. In the same month the mill was mortgaged for £800 by William Langtry, Phoebe’s son, who is believed to have become the miller. The Langtrys failed to redeem the mortgage and the mill passed out of their hands in 1821. At the end of its working life the mill was owned by the Gosling family who took over the mill in 1872. Between 1978 and 1991, the mill was restored by the Hampshire Buildings Preservation Trust. The sails were replaced in 1990 and the mill opened to the public in May 1991 and now stands as Hampshires only working windmill. Part of Hampshire Cultural Trust

We 💓 these tips from South Downs National Park on forest bathing 🌲

As the autumn leaves glisten and fall, there's never been a better time to explore the woods and soak up the serenity.

Here are some top tips for forest bathing:

- Turn off your electronic devices
- Breathe in deeply to your abdomen –try to make your exhalation twice the length of your inhalation
- Slow down – tune in to the sights, sounds and smells around you
- Be observant, keep your eyes open – you’ll be surprised at the number of wild forest inhabitants you might see using this process
- Stay as long as you can and build up the time as you practice.

There is something special about time outdoors, even in the changeable weather!

We are open Saturday & Sunday 10am-4pm. Come and get your fix of nature. Pre-bookings via our website preferred 😊

It's that time of year when we get every season in a day.

But just because the weather can't make up its mind, it doesn't mean we still can't enjoy the outdoors.

Spending just a few minutes outside every day can help improve our mood & give us a big positive boost.

Sure, we might need a raincoat & wellies but that's jut a perfect excuse for a warm hot chocolate when we get home.

Mill Phrases - Keep you nose to the grindstone

If set incorrectly, millstones could grind too hot and the flour would become cooked, creating a burning smell. Occasionally, flour would burst into flames. The miller kept his “nose to the grindstone” to detect the temperature and condition - and because many windmills were made of wood, they could (and frequently did) burn to the ground in a matter of minutes! 😮

Thank you very much Bursledon Windmill for the lovely nature craft pack & delicious crepes today, we really enjoyed it! It’s lovely to be able to come & visit again!
Had a fantastic day at the Christmas Fair yesterday, my Grandaughter really loved seeing Father Christmas. The carol singers and bell ringers were amazing - the whole place really got you into the spirit of Christmas. It was such a lovely calming setting. Definitely want to come back and see the Windmill working and learn more about this really wonderful place. Right on our doorsteps and this is the first time I have been here.
We found some family snapshots, including these three, all basically the same and sadly blurred, dated October 1941, with a note on the back in my Gran's writing saying that they lived there for six months, so we *think* that would make it spring to autumn 1941 that the windmill was where Gran lived with my Dad (then aged 2 1/2 to nearly 3), before they moved to So'ton near the Common, to be nearer where Grandaddy was working in the admin of docks/railways.
Evening I'm a local jewellery seller from sholing I was wondering who to contact about geting a craft table at your event on the 12/13th weekend thankyou if I could have a contact email I would be greatfull.
My video showing part of the Southampton Heritage Festival over the weekend featuring a cameo from the Windmill. Next time I hope the wind is strong.
Thank you for a lovely time this afternoon, everyone was so friendly! It was great to be able to actually go in the windmill even though it was very blowy!!
Really Chuffed My images are at the Lowford Community Centre Please Pop along to see my local images and of the new forest. Also great Images from Steve Foulkes While your there Check out the great cafe/Coffee Shop for tasty Treats Run by Gary, Top Breakfast Gary
Burlesdon Mill Restoration Project Has anyone out here got images 1MB or larger (check by putting the cursor over the image to denote the size) of the restoration work carried out in 2014 when a new windshaft was replaced, stocks were then fitted along with new sails. Inside or outside images of these elements along with a diagram of the Burledon Mill would be very helpful to the article I would like to write
I have a couple of photos from 1982 when I came to England to visit my roots, and my mother took me to see the windmill, given that it was her great grandfather's mill and she spent much time there and at the home on the same property when she was a child. One of the photos shows a neighboring pub, with curtains made from flour sacks that have George Gosling's stamp on them. George Gosling was my great great grandfather. Here are the photos, taken in September of 1982 when the National Trust was doing some restoration of the mill. Sorry about the quality. It was 1982 and I only had a little instamatic camera. Here is the pub curtain. 2 other photos of the mill in the comments, as it wouldn't net me include them in the original post.
A little video I took this afternoon
Had a really great day out at Bursledon Windmill back in May- it was a very relaxing place to be (and a good place to enjoy a picnic)! I particularly enjoyed seeing and photographing the wildlife in the pond (which sported large numbers of newts, dragonflies & damselflies). The windmill pond's Broad-bodied Chaser Dragonflies were particularly eye-catching! Here is a picture that I took of two Large Red Damselflies reproducing in the windmill pond:
Very excited to see several of these beauties, freshly hatched, in your pond today!
