Weavers' Triangle The Weavers' Triangle is Burnley's historic canalside. We run the Visitor Centre at Burnley Wharf with period rooms, exhibitions and activities and also look after the engine house and chimney at nearby Oak Mount Mill.

We are currently closed for winter and will re-open at Easter 2022. The page will be updated as our maintenance continues.

This season maintenance work has now started. However with a surprise. A long forgotten about original feature. A ash pit. It’s known dimensions at this moment are approximately 18” square and is currently dug out to 20” deep and was last used before 1950 when the building became empty.
Ash pits were built at the fireplace base so that old ashes could be swept or scraped into the ash pit and a fresh fire can be built in a clean fireplace. If hot ashes are instead swept into the ash pit, they are smothered by old ashes or burn out harmlessly. Some were even used to hide valuables, forbidden religious items and in World War Two, it is rumoured that a Liverpool dock worker was found with a radio and code book hidden inside his.
*Just little update. We have reached what we believe is the bottom of it at a little under 2 feet from floor level. This amazing feature will now be protected and the unburnt coal will be put aside in the coal bucket.

If fireworks stress you out then start thinking now about ways of lessening the effect they have on you. Breathing techniques, positive affirmations and distraction/grounding techniques can all work wonders. Download our fireworks prep guide here:

We would like to thank the Ledger Family for their recent donation of PA equipment for use in our Weavers Triangle area display room. The upgrade is one of many things planned for our closed winter season. There will live videos and Q&A with our maintenance manager and various updates over the period including local canal news so please keep checking back to see what’s happening. Have a local history story related to the canal, let us know.

Could we ask that our friends share this as many of the areas this child is linked to are on canal networks.

A massive thank you to everyone who turned out for local historian Roger Frost’s walk on Sunday. It was great to have such a good turn out.
Also a massive thank you to the cyclists, runners and other towpath users for their politeness and understanding. Once again the people of Burnley have shown what a fantastic place it is to live, work and exercise in.
Thank you all.

Wind the clock back to 1972 and join Ian Nairn as he travels along the Leeds & Liverpool canal. See how the landscape has changed and listen to some ahead of his time ideas about future canal usage from your guide. The journey passes through Burnley at just after the twelve minute mark and features footage of the then recently opened Charter Walk. The programme is available on BBC iPlayer for a year. Too good not to share. A twenty minute walk around Burnley town centre on a sunny day and in glorious 4K. The video is accompanied by lots of interesting historical nuggets. The development of the town comes across well.

Ruins of the Clocktower Mill from maybe late 80's, not too sure of date and I wasn't up to much with a camera back then.
You've probably seen this before but, this was opposite the Toll House back in 1981 before we tried to spruce it up with a Mural lol !

This will be the main focus but other canal related rope work will be covered. It will be at Café Cargo, Foulridge, Leeds Liverpool canal.
