Buckingham Old Gaol hosts Buckingham's museum as well as Buckingham Tourist Information Centre. Built in 1748, the building oozes character - inside and out.

The iconic Old Gaol in the heart of the historic market town of Buckingham. The purpose-built prison is now a museum, a tourist information centre, a gift shop, a second hand bookstore and a unique venue to hire.

Our information boards were based on the time line in The World of Flora Thompson Revisited by Christine Bloxham. While our temporary display is now back in the archive we do have a permanent display in our Flora Thompson room!

This year’s theme is “everyday lives”, so it is fitting we finish celebrating 150 years since the birth of Flora Thompson today. Her book “Lark Rise to Candleford” was based on the lives of people that lived in Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire in late Victorian times.
Why not combine a visit with some shopping at Buckingham market.

SEPTEMBER 19th HERITAGE OPEN DAY
Entrance to the Old Gaol is free on Saturday. There is also a heritage open day at Maids Moreton Hall, where they will be selling their pamphlet “Everyday Histories in Maids Moreton” for £3.

Thank you to Martin Greenwood for donating some of his research papers to our Flora Thompson archive. We have a limited number of his pamphlet, about some “Candleford Green” characters, for sale (£5) in our museum shop.
