“Standing in the chapel, I watched the light shift across the floor and realised the glass was designed not just to be seen, but to be felt.” - BU Student

In the Gothic chapel of Tyntesfield, light is more than illumination. Passing through stained glass, it becomes a language of faith.

Figures from biblical stories glow in deep reds, purples and blues, transforming the chapel interior into a space where architecture, devotion and imagination meet.

At Tyntesfield, this idea lives in every detail, from glowing stained glass and carved oak furniture to the small ritual objects used in worship.

Which object in a sacred space speaks most powerfully to you – light, material, colour, or symbol?

If you visited Tyntesfield last week, you may have spotted some live art in action 🎨

Botanical Vandals have been on site creating their bold new contribution to Reviving Gothic - spray painting a striking Gothic-inspired triptych live on large wooden canvases outside Tyntesfield House.

They’ll be back tomorrow on the veranda adding the final touches to their contemporary Gothic graffiti 👀

The finished works will then move into the exhibition in the Drawing Room from early June.

Tomorrow at Tyntesfield: Botanical Vandals (Rob and Sophie Wheeler) will be creating 'The Gothic Horror of the "Filthy" Rich: a Triptych' live on site 👀

Using spray paint on large wooden canvases (not the house!), the artists will transform Gothic motifs and histories into a striking contemporary work exploring the contradiction at the heart of Tyntesfield’s beauty and wealth.

At the centre of the piece stands a crowned guanay cormorant - both a symbol of prosperity and a reminder of the devastating human and environmental cost of the Victorian guano trade that funded the estate.

Come and watch the artwork take shape live tomorrow 🎨

Artist Tom Marshman (photo 2) presents 'A Very Gothic Gathering' - a sound installation inviting visitors to eavesdrop on an impossible dinner party, where Gothic voices from across time gather beneath Tyntesfield’s roof 🎧

Blending storytelling, archival research and live art, the work imagines conversations between figures including Lord Byron, Angela Carter, Bram Stoker, Emily Brontë, and Alexander McQueen - encounters that never happened.

Created in collaboration with audio producer Bernie Hodges, the installation explores outsider identities, q***r histories, and the enduring influence of Gothic culture today.

📍 On display now in the Drawing Room at Tyntesfield House as part of Reviving Gothic.

Featuring performances from Peter Baker, Lotte Allan, Emma Keavney Roys, and Bernie Hodges, with piano by Jenny Williams.
