Neon School

Neon School We are a small neon art studio on Brighton seafront that designs neon for industry and art. Once a month we share our skills in a bespoke workshop.

Once a month we share our skills. Whether you are an expert requiring a masterslass or an absolute beginner looking for an unforgettable weekend you have come to the right place. All students leave with a working piece of neon art that they have made.

Tobi, returning to neon school from Stuttgart, Germany, built this incredibly emotional token for his little boy.

A moon behind clouds, perfect for night time story telling.

A demanding and interesting international two day experience.

As part of celebration of neon at UCL, founder of neon school Andy Doig revealed the workings of this extraordinary medium and explored its history. From its origins in the early 20th century to its embrace by artists in the 1960s, concluding with neon’s emergence into the 21st century as an endangered craft of great cultural significance. The talk was accompanied by a live demonstration of the underappreciated and increasingly rare skill of glass bending.

The celebration continued in the UCL Culture Lab where a new display was unveiled celebrating the medium, which includes a specially commissioned neon work along with a display, zine and interactive map created by students on the MSc Conservation of Contemporary Art and Media.

Together, these projects uncover the histories, materials and making processes behind neon signs and artworks, and the challenges involved in preserving them for the future.

The display is part of the Patterns exhibition currently in the Culture Lab at UCL East, Marshgate. It’s free to Drop-in on Wednesdays 1pm to 4pm, on selected Saturdays, or by appointment.

The finished piece fused ribbons of glass into a form then filled with pure neon.
