Rottingdean Heritage

Rottingdean Heritage Rottingdean Heritage looks after the Grange Gallery, Museum and Gardens, Windmill, Golden Square Washhouse and village Phone Box.

RH also is involved in trying to preserve the beautiful downland around the village and the wonderful historic buildings. Originating from the former Rottingdean Ratepayers’ Association the Society, as we know it today, came into being following the publication of the 1947 Town and Country Planning Act whereby every local authority had to submit a development plan by the end of that year. Resident

s felt that Rottingdean was taking a disproportionate share of the proposed increase in housing which would effectively ruin its historic village character. One of the early successes of the Preservation Society was their opposition to the development of the Kipling Gardens, now such a centerpiece of the village, and the Society still retains strong management liaison with the City Council via a member of its Executive Committee and The Friends of Kipling Gardens. While development and population have moved on apace over the past half-century the aims of the Society remain the same – to preserve its historic buildings, cultivate and encourage interest in them and the village and oppose, where possible, any schemes that would threaten the unique character of Rottingdean. The Society continues to keep a watchful eye on planning applications and liaise closely in this with the Parish Council. When the Rottingdean Parish Council was reformed in 1996 the question was asked as to whether the Preservation Society was still essential for the wellbeing of the village. But the roles of the two organisations differ considerably and the Preservation Society remains essential for the upkeep and maintenance of the several important village assets – the Windmill, the Grange Museum and Art Gallery, the Grange Gardens, the Golden Square Washhouse and the village's iconic red Telephone Box. These responsibilities lay outside the local government remit of the Parish Council and rest squarely on the shoulders of the many volunteers who form the backbone of the Society today. Importantly, the separate identities of the two organisations also allow for the Preservation Society to make representations on matters where its views might differ from those of the Parish Council. In December 2020 the Society changed its name from Rottingdean Preservation Society to Rottingdean Heritage to further establish a differential between it and the work of the Parish Council. Rottingdean Heritage continues its charitable work and welcomes new members who want to support it in the future.

The Rottingdean Art Club exhibition is now in full swing and we look forward to welcoming you to this eclectic Spring show :). We’re so pleased to welcome Rottingdean Art Club back to The Grange Gallery for their 2025 exhibition ‘Flow’

‘The artist’s desire to capture on canvas the flow of natural forces such as water, wind, and the ever-changing seasons, has long been a challenge.
In psychology, flow can also be described as “a state of heightened concentration in which one is completely absorbed in an activity”, resulting in a sense of positivity, pleasure, and wellbeing.
It’s good to go with the flow!’

The exhibition is open from Wednesday 23rd April to Sunday 4th May and we look forward to welcoming you to the gallery.

The Grange Gallery is located on The Green in the picturesque village-on-the-sea of Rottingdean in East Sussex. We are opposite the village pond and The Plough Public House. The exhibition is on a first floor (above Rottingdean Library) and a chairlift is available. Gallery opening hours are Wednesday to Saturday 10.00 am to 4.00 pm and Sunday 1.00 pm to 4.00 pm. Admission free.

It would be lovely to see you over the Easter weekend at The Grange Gallery Rottingdean, where we’re open and showing a wonderful uplifting exhibition by Nate Cordery.

Nate is a Brighton-based artist working from his studio and gallery on Brighton Seafront. He grew up and studied painting in the ’steel city’ of Sheffield but now living in Brighton his inspiration comes from the beauty in nature, our surroundings and the spaces we inhabit.

The Grange Gallery (Rottingdean Heritage) is located on The Green in the picturesque village-on-the-sea of Rottingdean in East Sussex. We are opposite the village pond and The Plough Public House. Thank you for you post on our current exhibition by . It’s the final week now so we do hope you can join us and maybe help raise funds for the animal charity Posted • An exhibition private view is a wonderful way to catch up with fellow artists (even if you arrive late!), especially when we are supporting such a deserving cause.

Helping Paws was created by Karen Lippitt 12years ago primarily to rescue animals and distressed pets from natural disasters and war torn countries.

Seen here is friend and supporter Sarah Sellers infront of her tribute painting of her late father Peter Sellers.
Also neighour and friends Kes with her red setter dog, Graham stands infront of his artwork with a donated picture by Fat Boy Slim ( below).
More foxes by Sara Reeve ( sorry i didn’t take her photo) and nice to also see Romany who has also designed the exhibition imagery.
The display is skillfully hung by Sara Abbott

Down To The Bone 2 is currently on at The Grange Gallery, Rottingdean, Sussex until Sunday 6th April.

Proceeds of art sales go towards helping defenceless animals, and i’m delighted that my protrait of my animal companion Dolly has now been sold!

We are so pleased to give details of our next exhibition at The Grange Gallery.

Helping Paws presents DOWN TO THE BONE 2, a collective art exhibition to raise funds for animals in the UK and overseas.

Do come and visit Will who is in The Grange daily alongside his exhibition ‘Colourstuff’
Running to 23rd March there’s no-one better than the artist himself to describe his work:

‘Step right up! Come on down!
The primitive world of the colourstuff comes to town.
Taking the gloom out of any room, eyeball pleasers and perception teasers mingle for your delectation.
You want colour? We have colour!
Get a Chroma zing to welcome the Spring.
Step right up!’
