Wow, it’s the 1st of June tomorrow so only 3 weeks to our open weekend!

The volunteers are busy landscaping, weeding and tending the dig for victory gardens keeping them in good shape for the open weekend. We are also cracking on with the 3 sided exhibition building and the Queen Mary trailer is being given a coat of paint too. We are very grateful to Andy Ward, who is making parts for the crashed Hurricane. Thanks Andy.

Rick, our curator, has been very busy putting some more model aircraft displays together for you to enjoy too.

On Thursday we welcomed around 30 visitors from the Scunthorpe U3A, history group and after a presentation given by Dave Gibson, they were shown around the exhibition buildings. They also had breakfasts, toasties, scones, cakes etc. plus drinks from our very busy NAAFI. It was pretty hot in there. The feedback from the group has been fantastic and they were also very generous in their donations. As you’ll be aware, we are a not for profit centre and we rely heavily on donations to enable us to keep the Centre running.

As stated earlier, our open weekend is on the 27th and 28th June, details are below in the posters. It’s going to be a great 2 days and we look forward to seeing you there. Remember, admission is free but we would be very grateful for donations. Thank you.

My goodness, what a hot one today, the NAAFI ladies were melting serving full English breakfasts!

There’s been plenty going on even though a few volunteers are on holiday.
Carrying on from last week, the low box hedges on the memorial path and around the klargester sewage system have been trimmed and look much tidier. There’s been plenty of grounds work, mowing and strimming, not forgetting watering of the vegetables in the dig for victory garden.

The Bloodhound missile and communications vehicle have been repositioned opening up some space. The Centre has also acquired a 1940’s Fire pump, a great new exhibit.

We were pleased to welcome a group from the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Society on Thursday and they were very complimentary having been guided around the buildings.

During coffee break today, the Centre’s mascot, Dave the Cat, paid us a visit, he obviously approves of all that’s gone on over the years as he’s a regular visitor🐱!

It really isn’t long now until the Open weekend on 27th & 28th June, so come on down if you can and enjoy the entertainment, exhibits and stalls. There’s a great selection and what’s more- admission is free! The NAAFI will be serving drinks and cold food on both days. We look forward to welcoming you all. Save those dates folks!

It’s been another busy week for our volunteers, there’s always something to do.

The three sided exhibition hut has a fully completed over lapped back and work has started on the sides. Grounds work is ongoing with mowing, strimming and weeding. The box hedging on either side of the memorial pathway has also been trimmed, it looks very neat and tidy.

We are very grateful to Penny, David and their family for their generous donation and items from Penny’s father, who was an air gunner during the Battle of Britain. Speaking of which, the Centre displayed an excellent information board today about the The Dambusters to accompany the existing indoor exhibits.

Over the next few weeks the volunteers will be very busy preparing for our two day open weekend on 27th and 28th June. Details are in the posters below and we hope to welcome as many of you as possible, so save those dates!

The volunteers have, as usual, been very busy on site this week and we also held a very successful fundraising concert.

The new 3 sided exhibition building is looking great, lots of wooden slats are being overlapped requiring even more screws to hold them in place. Very time consuming but worth it. The dig for victory gardens look amazing and the planted vegetables are growing well, thanks to the recent rain and sunshine.

The Lincolnshire Fire & Rescue Concert Band were amazing last night and the volunteers would like to thank everyone who came and supported the Aviation Centre. There were some very lucky raffle winners who won tremendous prizes too. Most people will think that the night ended there but our chaps were busy returning chairs to our Centre this morning, thank goodness we have our trusty mower and trailer.

Our next big venture will be our open weekend on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th June. The volunteers would like to thank John Haywood for creating a poster for us, detailing all the events taking place over the two days. If anyone would like to hold a stall or exhibit on the two days please contact Rick Greenfield on 07717-760953.

The volunteers look forward to seeing as many of you as possible over the weekend. Admission is, once again, free and the NAAFI will be serving a wide range of drinks and cold food for visitors. Well behaved dogs, kept on lead, are most welcome.

This week has been a tale of 2 seasons- Thursday like summer and today, cold and wet but the volunteers have still worked away as they always do.

The sides of the new exhibition building are steadily been attached and newly seeded areas are sprouting well. The dig for victory garden is thriving and the international flags look stunning.

We still have a few seats available for our fundraising concert next Saturday, contact details are below. Call us to avoid disappointment.

If anyone wishes to hold a stall or show an exhibit during our open weekend, 27th & 28th June please contact Rick Greenfield on 07717-760953. Come along and enjoy a couple of great days, admission is free and well behaved dogs, on lead, are welcome too.

Our volunteers have thoroughly enjoyed this week’s wonderful weather and have worked super hard too.

The new toilet block has had an external coat of paint and looks in keeping with our other buildings now. Although temporary pending our new gateway, the entrance has undergone a tidy up and looks much better as you approach the Centre.

The final roof panel has been fitted to the new exhibition building and the sides are going up quickly now. Groundwork’s and the dig for victory garden are being worked on, with beetroot and radishes planted out.

Today the Centre was very busy and we were pleased to have the Ermine Street classic car club visit us again, sampling some of the tasty delights in the NAAFI.

With only 2 weeks to go until our fundraising concert on the 9th May, you’ll have to ring and reserve your seats quickly to avoid disappointment. See below for contact details.

Our open weekend on 27th and 28th June is going to be a great event with plenty of 40’s music, stalls, exhibits and military vehicles to enjoy together with many new exhibits within the Centre’s exhibition buildings. Come along and join us, admission is free and well behaved dogs, on lead are welcome. Please contact Rick Greenfield on 07717-760953 if you wish to have a stall or exhibit anything over the weekend.

It’s been another amazing week for our volunteers at the centre, they really are a super dedicated bunch.

The new exhibition building has the roof on, although the photos don’t show it, and it’s time to start working on the sides. Lots of grounds work is on going, seeding those bare areas after the winter. The dig for victory garden is flourishing too.

We have also obtained a 1940’s wedding dress made from parachute silk and a genuine 1942 RAF road roller. These are brilliant additions to see.

Not long until our 9th May fundraising concert, seats are being booked quickly so call to reserve yours, details are below in the poster.

Before you know it, we will be holding our two day open weekend on 27/28th June so save the date and come and join us.
If anyone wishes to bring their military vehicle or hold a stall on our open weekend, please ring Richard Greenfield on 07717-760953.

Well, I’m truly amazed by our volunteers! They have worked tirelessly on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and continued to do so today to improve the centre and welcome our visitors. We were not disappointed either, visitors new and old came to join us and it was heartwarming to have all our hard efforts so kindly received. Our new signs have made finding us much easier now.

As you will see below, our new toilet block has a lovely new tarmac approach, the NAAFI has a new tarmac entrance and there have been lots of repairs around the track and approach to the Centre.

Work on our new exhibition building continues well with the Queen Mary Bomb trailer almost filling the space. The much needed grounds maintenance and building maintenance is ongoing and we are very proud of the horseshoe poppy now displayed on the rear of the NAAFI wall. It’s quite stunning! The Anderson shelter is decked out and you can experience squeezing inside as many did during WW2. The potatoes have been planted in the dig for victory garden and we look forward to seeing them flourish.

The NAAFI welcomed many folk this morning and we lost track of the number of breakfasts, toasties, scones and tea cakes we served along with teas, coffees and hot chocolates. Everyone was very complimentary and we look forward to seeing them all again.

It’s less than 4 weeks to our Spring fundraising concert, seats are rapidly being booked so call either number on the poster below to reserve yours to avoid being disappointed.

Other dates to note on your calendar’s are 27th and 28th June when our open weekend promises many interesting attractions and entertainment on both days. Please see below for details.
