Why is English so wonderfully unpredictable? Where do our words come from, how has the language changed, and why do words such as bead and bread look as though they should rhyme - but don’t?

In this lively one-woman show, spoken-word artist and self-confessed linguistics nerd Melanie Branton brings the story of English to life through poetry, storytelling, comedy and audience participation. Travelling from the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings to social media and the language of today, Melanie reveals how centuries of migration, invention and cultural exchange have shaped the way we speak and write.

Funny, thoughtful and performed entirely by one captivating storyteller, the show celebrates the rich, surprising and multicultural history of English - encouraging audiences to become curious, confident and playful readers, writers and speakers.

Leonian Dream are heading back to Bridport, and bringing some serious talent with them. 🎸

We loved having them last time, and we can't wait to welcome them back to headline another night packed with the best emerging talent the South West has to offer.

Joining them are COSM, a Falmouth four-piece fresh off a Boardmasters slot, known for loud guitars, heavy hitting drums and infectious vocal harmonies.

Also joining are RatTrap, a Plymouth indie rock band bringing driving riffs and plenty of on-stage energy, with both guitarists proud to be playing on home turf in Bridport.

We are really excited about this one. 🔊

Some news that has made all of us at BAC feel rather emotional.

PJ Harvey has made an incredibly generous donation to our Come Together campaign. This support doesn't come from a distance. PJ Harvey’s connection to Bridport Arts Centre goes right back to the beginning of her career and now, decades later, she has donated to help secure our future.

Her support moves the campaign forward in a very real way but it means so much more than a number. It’s is a wonderful vote of confidence in what BAC is, what it brings to this community and the future we are working so hard to build. PJ, thank you.

If this inspires you to join her, please donate what you can, share the campaign and help us bring Bridport Arts Centre into community ownership.

“There’s a certain energy about this place.”

For Ryan, Bridport Arts Centre is a pillar of creativity. A place with history, heart and a real sense of belonging. Now it’s our turn to protect it.

We’re raising £400,000 to bring BAC into community ownership and secure its future for generations to come.

Watch Ryan’s story. Then help us Come Together.
