SEPTEMBER 12th/13th OPEN WEEKEND
The H9PG is pleased to announce that our next event will be on Saturday 12th & Sunday 13th September 2026.
Step back in time to the 1940s with The Hut 9 Preservation Group and our re-enactors who support us.
Embark on a journey through Bridgend's WWII past as we unveil the secrets of the massive ordnance factories, the American soldiers stationed at the camp, the German pow escape and the high ranking German officers who were later held there.
Although not suitable for children under 5 or people with mobility issues, this event offers an enriching and enjoyable experience for history enthusiasts of all ages.

OTDIH — 5th August 1942: Intercepted Over the Bristol Channel

Under the cover of darkness, a German Heinkel He 111 bomber made its approach towards Swansea, targeted for a night bombing raid. It never reached its destination.
Scrambled to intercept, a Bristol Beaufighter of No. 125 (Newfoundland) Squadron engaged the bomber, sending it crashing into the sea off the coast of Ilfracombe, Devon.
All five crew members managed to ditch in the cold waters, but the drama was far from over. Two of the airmen perished—including Walter Knoppik, who is believed to have shot himself in the water following the crash. Thirteen days later, on 18th August 1942, Walter’s body washed ashore across the channel at Newton Beach, near Porthcawl.

The two photos are a before and after (cleaned up version) of a drawing made by a German PoW whilst held at Island Farm.
I believe that the text written in the Gothic/Fraktur script says: “Vindobona”.

Vindobona is the historic Roman name for the city of Vienna, Austria.
The shield in the upper right corner features a cross, which is the traditional coat of arms for Vienna.
The cathedral spire sketched on the left represents Stephansdom (St. Stephen's Cathedral), which is an iconic landmark of the Vienna skyline.
