Thanks to everyone who turned up for our latest meeting on the future of the Townhouse Museum last night. It looks like we have the beginnings of a new group keen to explore taking over the running of the Townhouse. They will be meeting soon to discuss how that might be done. We look forward to following their progress, and all going well to an eventual re-opening of this superb building.

A further meeting of all interested in taking forward the Town House as a community building will be held on Tuesday 19th August at 6.30pm in the Cathedral Hall.

We are a small group, and we need more people to come on board. We would particularly welcome:

• Anyone with any ideas for the use of this building with or without artefacts.

• Any community group with drive, ambition, and vision to run this beautiful space?

• Any members of the community willing to step forward to form a committee to drive a project forward.

If a use is not found or no group can be found, then Angus Council will look for a Commercial tenant.

If you’re dynamic, driven and have vision please email [email protected] or just come along on 19th August, a warm welcome awaits.

This weekend is the last chance to view the Piping Routes exhibition on show with free entry in the rooms above Brechin Castle Walled Garden tearoom. An exhibition with a tearoom, what's not to like!
The City of Brechin Pipe Band was the first civilian pipe band and the exhibition covers local bagpipe making and bands from the other Angus burghs too. All very pertinent when the future of our pipe band's hall is up for consultation

Let’s get our museum open again!

We are holding another public meeting on Sunday 22/6/25 at the Townhouse Museum at 1.30.

Local historian, Peter Kinghorn will be giving one of his engaging talks entitled, Witches, Plagues and Jacobites. These talks have always been popular, and the Townhouse is a great venue for them.

If want to support the reopening and development of the building there will be a presentation on the scope for doing this, and a chance to have your say in retaining the facility for the benefit of the community and for visitors.

There event is free and there will be refreshments. It’s also another chance to see the great artwork from the town’s schools. We asked them to paint their favourite thing in Brechin - come and see!

We’re busy getting the museum busy for our events this weekend. Tomorrow (Friday 20th) we are staging an exhibition of local schools artwork. We asked them to paint their favourite thing about Brechin - and we’ve had heaps of great entries. Please pop along and join us for a glass of wine or a cuppy and other refreshments and enjoy the art.

We are also holding a public meeting as part of this event about the future of the Brechin Townhouse Museum. As you’ll know it’s been pretty much closed for some time and we need to find interested individuals and parties to take the building into community control - otherwise we will lose it. We need to hear your bright ideas about how we can take the building forward, maybe incorporating an art gallery, performance space or arts & crafts retail space alongside the museum element.

We’d love to see you tomorrow (Friday at 6.30). Come and have a cuppy and a biscuit, or a cold drink and help us save this community asset. And on Sunday at 1/30pm we have another meeting with a talk from Peter Kinghorn entitled, Witches, Plague and Jacobites. Peter’s talks are always engaging. Listen to Peter and have your say on the future of the building.

Do you want the Townhouse Museum to reopen? Would you like it to be more than a museum, maybe have an art gallery or event space? Would you like to help make this happen?

A feasibility study has been carried out which shows support for the venue, but it will need people to make things happen? Could this be you?

Even if you’re just curious or want to see inside the building please. Come along to one or both of these public events and help secure a fitting future for this important building.

The first on Friday is an art competition from the local schools Andover, Maisondieu, Edzell & Stracathro Primary and Brechin High School. Come along and see the children’s art work.

Second event is a talk from the wonderful Peter Kinghorn on local history. Alongside these two events we will be seeking your ideas on the future direction of Brechin Townhouse.

Details below, please come along. If you want to see the building remain for community use then come and share your ideas and vision.

Delve into Forfar’s dark past and explore the story of the Forfar Witches during Forfar Witch Week, 23 to 29 September.

The Forfar Witch Trials took place between 1661-1663 and involved 42 local people who were imprisoned and tortured on suspicion of witchcraft. 22 women were found guilty of the crime and executed over the three-year period.

Join ANGUSalive on 25 & 26 September for a Guided Walk around Forfar to hear more. Or join local historians Shaun Wilson and Judith Langlands-Scott on 28 & 29 September and hear a fascinating talk about this dark time in history.
