Good to see Jonathan Shearer today with new works. We have “Strathy Point”, “the river Averon”, “Balgy Falls” , Ancient oaks, “Loch Glass” , “Lochnagar “ and “Shandwick” …. Nice chat about as always about painting, connecting with nature through the arts, mindfulness, jumping in rivers and the sheer glee of engaging with the natural world. I really enjoy Jonathans commitment to his art and his vision.

Lennox Dunbar has a show with the RSA - “Constructed Narratives” - we are lucky enough to be exhibiting some of his work at the galley just now - wonderful stuff from a true gentleman.

Opening this Saturday, Constructed Narratives brings together works by three Aberdeen-born Academicians, including Lennox Dunbar RSA.

Dunbar's mixed media paintings and prints explore the notion of ‘place,’ usually by incorporating objects from his locale. Drawing on the iconography of the northeast of Scotland, Dunbar reflects this sense of a place through glimmers of objects and shapes, creating his own form of archaeology by layering, honing and adjusting a work.

‘My work in both painting and print is made through a process of constructing and deconstructing, building and dismantling, to evoke and embody the nature of change – to reflect and reveal in an associative way the importance of making. Works are resolved by additive, accumulative and sometimes reductive processes, and none are safe until in their frames.’

Lovely to catch-up with my printmaking lecturer, Lennox Dunbar. I’ve always really enjoyed the physicality of these works - made of layers and layers of paint and ink and resin. Often the final work is bolted together to form these incredibly tactile artworks. It’s really special for me to have these works in the gallery.

Brand new Kitty Watt Aquatint Etchings have arrived in the tundra! I’m always attracted to the “dark trees” iconography in these works. The Norse “Mirkwood”, The woods belonging to the Fairy Queen of Tam Lin and even the Gruffalo’s Deep Dark Wood. Special places both real and of the imagination.

We always love a chat about printmaking and love it when our artists pop in with new work. Deb Wing has just dropped off new Lino cut works to the gallery. Deb works in variable editions which give every single print pulled from the plate a unique feel and subtle difference between the various prints. This is always stated on the print as V/E (variable edition) and the print number eg: 8/12 ( number eight out of twelve in the edition ). Love the build up of ink as the Lino process leaves the paper thick with overlapping extended colour, rolled blends and embossed textures.

Tundra Journal : Stardate 18052024. Shine. My favourite mix of blue sky and cool air. Suddenly it’s summer in the tundra after what seems like the longest winter ever. Great day to get yo’ boots on and get out for a soul cleansing stravaig. To paraphrase Mr Keats “I will learn poetry here…”

Some breathtaking large scale canvases from Mr Jonathan Shearer have just landed at tundra headquarters. Always a pleasure to spend some time with Jonathan discussing painting techniques, the pros and cons of painting en plein air and life in general. I always admire Jonathan’s commitment to his art - often travelling to inaccessible places and painting in some of the harshest conditions.

Always lovely to see the mighty Stuart Buchanan here in the tundra. A great chat about art, inspiration, music on vinyl and the human condition over a strong coffee and a mint club. That’s the way we roll in t’tundra! Stuart has been working hard on his “swimmer” series and the haunting “lone figure in the forest” series. These always conjure the sense of scale and wonder that I feel when stravaigin in the woods. There’s nothing like a walk in the woods to give one a better sense of perspective.

Tundra Journal: Stardate 19042024 . The weathers moods are all over the place just now - sun/rain/sleet/calm/gusty. The stags are shedding thier antlers - I think I saw some sand martins but it’s way too early surely? Woodpeckers are woodpecking, oystercatchers are peeping, the lapwings are here and the crows are noisily making nests - dragging massive twigs into tiny spaces. Come on Spring! You can do it!
