Happy summer solstice! 🌞

We're (perhaps optimistically) hoping for sunshine in Yorkshire and have been digging through our collections to inspire our summer mood.

These snapshot photographs are taken from our Kodak collection, documenting British seaside holidays in the early to mid 20th century. As cheap, easy-to-use cameras became more widely available, people took them on day trips and holidays to capture their happy memories.

This Saturday (20 June) we're hosting a special edition of our Setting the Stage pop-up parties as part of National Windrush Day celebrations 💚

Traditional Jamaican ska and reggae band Natural Rhythm Ska Band will be performing in the foyer across the afternoon to bring the party to life, alongside all of our regular Setting the Stage fun - including dress-up, photo opportunities, live game shows and a silent disco.

Pictureville Cinema is also hosting a special screening of Milestone: Streets Paved with Gold, adapted from Victor Richards’ acclaimed one-man play, following Augustus Cleveland Johnson from his 1948 arrival in England through decades of resilience, family, culture, and identity.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Victor Richards.

We're celebrating the life and work of Bradford icon David Hockney with the return of this insightful, cinematic celebration of a 21st-century master of creativity.

Featuring intimate and in-depth interviews with Hockney, this revealing film focuses on two blockbuster exhibitions held in 2012 and 2016 at the Royal Academy of Art in London.

🎥It's a big day for anniversaries! The museum first opened its doors on 16 June 1983 and the first Cinerama screening in Bradford took place a decade later on 16 June 1993.

The film was This is Cinerama, a 115-minute montage of scenes designed to showcase the potential of the format, which was nominated for an Academy Award in 1953.

In just over a month you can catch another three-strip presentation of This Is Cinerama alongside a projection room tour, where we will offer you a closer look at that famous technology!

Remembering David Hockney ❤️

We are deeply saddened by the news of David Hockney's passing.

One of the most influential artists of the modern era and a leader in the 1960s pop art movement, David Hockney was born in Bradford and went on to become one of the world's most celebrated and recognisable artists.

We have been incredibly proud to showcase David Hockney's work here at the National Science and Media Museum. The above image is of Hockney creating one of his celebrated photographic joiners featuring the museum, a work that was most recently displayed in our exhibition David Hockney: Pieced Together in January 2025.

A pioneering artist who continually embraced new ways of seeing and making images, Hockney leaves behind an extraordinary legacy that continues to inspire audiences in Bradford and around the world.

Using fascinating items from our handling collection, you’ll encourage visitors to explore, ask questions, and connect with the history of sound and vision technologies in a meaningful way.

You’ll spark conversations, share engaging insights, and help visitors feel confident interacting with objects in a safe and accessible way.

This role is a great opportunity to develop your confidence, communication skills, and understanding of visitor experience, while sharing your enthusiasm for culture, history, and technology.

🍿For little cinema lovers, join us at Pictureville every other Friday for Cineminis, perfect for pre-schoolers. Our next screening is Sarah & Duck on Friday 19 June, only £2 per person.

🎞Also keep an eye out for our regular Baby-Friendly Pictureville screenings & Kids' Club screenings every Saturday.

Buggy parking is available and baby changing facilities can be found throughout the museum. Kids lunches are available at our café or you can bring your own food & drink and use one of the dedicated picnic spaces.
