Somerset & Wood was born out of a shared love of art, history, design and collecting. Our vision is to share this online through our blog, and to offer specially selected artworks for sale at very affordable prices. All our artworks are guaranteed original, one-off collectors’ pieces. We specialise in English 19th- and early 20th-century works on paper. With combined expertise from working in the

fine art trade and for national museums across the UK, we have an interest in researching and bringing lesser-known artists into prominence. And, most importantly, as collectors (‘curators’) ourselves, we deal only in works that we think are of value and would ourselves be excited to own. It is vital to us that our works are original and unique, because, to us, here lies the joy of art. An artwork is an authentic and tangible creation from a singular imagination. When viewed – held – owned, a connection forms between the creator and viewer. In a world where products are becoming increasingly disposable and transactions impersonal, we celebrate these personal connections, across centuries – and, with the global dialogues enabled by the online marketplace, across continents.

The lodge in this charming view is the summer retreat of the Urmstons at Dalhousie, India. Amateur artist Henry Brabazon Urmston served in the Bengal Army 1847–74. He held various positions, including Assistant Commissioner in the Punjab with special duty in Kashmir during 1857, and Deputy Commissioner in Peshawar, Bannu, Sialkot, Amritsar and Rawalpindi.

In 1850 he married Harriett Elizabeth Hughes (1828–1897)—possibly the women at the right of the picture—who had arrived in India earlier that year as a Christian missionary, a calling to which she was to devote her life in both India and later in the UK. Her mission was not to the people of India, but initially to the wives of the soldiers. Her meetings attracted the husbands too and she was known as ‘Holy Mary’. After their return to the UK in 1875 due to ill health, she spent years—unusually for a woman—preaching in support of the Zenana Bible and Medical Missionary Society.

The child at the left is likely one of their daughters; the Urmstons had eight children—in 1861 they would have had two daughters aged eight and three.

A selection of works from our Vienna Secession Ex Libris Bookplates 1900–1925 collection—fabulous examples of European Modernism, telling interesting stories of the connections between artist and book owner, and the cultural lives of intellectuals in pre-war Austria-Hungary. Demolished in the 1950s-60s, Thoby Priory at Mountnessing in Essex was the birthplace of the solicitor and industrialist Charles Ranken Vickerman. Here the family home comes to life through the brush of Charles's wife, Jane Dorothy Harvey. In 1873, Vickerman founded the Bonvilles Court Coal & Iron Co. in Pembrokeshire, South Wales. In 1863 he bought Hean Castle at Saundersfoot, a mansion of red sandstone, which he rebuilt and greatly enlarged.

This picture is part of our collection 'Jane D. Harvey (fl.1830s–1870s): Doddinghurst to Saundersfoot'.

Interesting botanical watercolours documenting the flora in Australia, Hong Kong and Singapore during the period 1886 to 1890—with locations cited at 'Peak', 'S. Morrison Hill', 'West Point' and 'Stone Cutter's Island' in Hong Kong, and 'Singapore', along with some native Australian species, such as Golden Wattle, Common Fringe-myrtle, and the shrub Hakea laurina endemic to Western Australia (image 6).

Some of the species are non-native plants introduced as ornamentals for parks and gardens, evidencing the influence of British colonial officials on Hong Kong landscaping and flora in the 19th century.

This week we have listed an intriguing pair of wash drawings depicting Lady Rushout and Children, attributed to Henry William Bunbury (1750–1811). One of the compositions exists as 1915 print by Charles Knight that was reproduced in The Connoisseur Volume XLI, after the Bunbury original (image 3). The subject of the drawing is Rebecca Rushout (1740–1818), daughter of Humphrey Bowles of Wanstead, who married John Rushout in 1766. He succeeded his father as 5th Baronet in 1773 and was created Baron Northwick in 1797. Lady Rushout is depicted with two of her five children—likely the two eldest, Anne and Harriet. John Rushout became celebrated as one of the most important collectors of Old Master Pictures in the 19th Century, as well as of works by contemporary British artists.

The Austrian painter-decorator Josef Kott (fl.1880s/1890s) ran a Vienna-based company, whose commissions included the interior painting of palaces and theatres across the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Examples of his work include grand interiors at Peleș Castle in Romania (images 5–7) and the magnificent Konzerthaus Ravensburg in Baden-Württemberg, Germany (image 4).

The prevailing architectural style in Vienna in the late 19th century was Historicism, characterised by revival styles like Neo-Renaissance, Neo-Gothic, and Neo-Baroque. Facades and interiors were exceptionally grand and opulent, idealising and reinterpreting past styles to create a contemporary aesthetic that represented the power of the Habsburg Empire. Kott's contractors included the Künstler-Compagnie workshop artists Gustav Klimt, Ernst Klimt, and Franz Matsch.

The Classical and Renaissance design studies in our collection showcase Josef Kott's exceptional talent as a draughtsman, and evidence the historical reference points that were a direct influence in his decorative work.

Not so much a topographical study but an exercise in William Gilpin's picturesque, Rev. Hon. Charles Francis Annesley (1787–1863) draws the Rosslyn Castle from the vantage point of the river North Esk so that the ruins tower majestically above, and burgeoning natural foliage fills the lower half of the composition. Annesley was the son of Arthur Annesley (1760–1841) of Bletchingdon Park, Oxfordshire (image 5 top). Educated at Christ Church and All Souls College, Oxford, he served as rector of Sawtry St Andrew in Huntingdonshire from 1812 to 1831. In 1811 he inherited Eydon Hall in Northamptonshire from a great uncle (image 5 bottom).

There are ink and wash drawings by Annesley in the British Museum (image 2) and The Huntington, San Marino, California (image 3). His views include landscapes in Italy, Austria and Wales, which similarly show the influence of Claudian compositional values and contemporary picturesque tastes.
