Marseillaise Sampler jug No. 1 features transfer designs on pearlware from across Paul Scott’s (b. 1953) 30-year career.

Focused on his Cumbria-inspired works, Scott combines traditional rural motifs of cattle and hedgerows with images of heavy industry, challenging the perception of Cumbria as a 'rural idyll', untouched by industrialisation.

You can see this piece alongside many other contemporary artworks in our current exhibition ‘Useful/Beautiful’, showing until Saturday 29 August.

Blackwell is open Monday - Saturday, 10 - 5.

“Catching sight of them first upon entering the space, they are spread out much like a display of trinkets in the home. Upon inspection, their partial submersion in a layer of cracked red clay brings up in me a feeling of unease and I am keen to know more.” - Kirsty Jukes for the Fourdrinier

Readymade ceramics and Passchendaele clay

You can see these clay artworks in Useful/Beautiful, Blackwell’s current contemporary craft exhibition.

"I feel as though there was something for every taste here. Those interested in art and design have a variety of objects to be inspired by, those interested in history have work from across time periods to analyse, those interested in engineering can marvel at the means of production and everyone else can relax in a space made for quiet contemplation."

We're delighted that Kirsty Dukes enjoyed her visit to Useful/Beautiful at Blackwell – the Arts & Crafts house.
