Built by Merton Russell-Cotes as a gift for his wife, Annie, the house celebrates the couple's passion for art, travel, world cultures and natural history. They richly furnished the house and galleries, filling them with a remarkable collection of British art and sculpture and beautiful objects from their travels across the world. Many works by the great artists of the Victorian and Edwardian periods, Landseer, Frith, Herkomer, Edwin Long, Albert Moore, Munnings and many works by the Pre-Raphaelites (including Rosetti's Venus Verticordia) and female artists including Evelyn de Morgan's Aurora Triumphans. This week, the team has been busy hanging more than 70 original nineteenth-century Japanese prints, transforming the gallery ahead of opening day. We thought you'd enjoy this sneak peek of the exhibition taking shape...

Just 10 days until Edo Women: Japanese Prints 1825–1900! 🇯🇵

With more than 70 original nineteenth-century Japanese prints on display, the exhibition offers a captivating glimpse into the everyday lives of women in Japan during a period of extraordinary change.

This striking print, Looking Dark (1888) by Tsukioka Yosh*toshi (1832–1892), captures a quiet everyday moment as a woman lights an oil lamp after her afternoon nap.

Today's weather is certainly feeling more autumnal, and it's got us looking forward to the rich colours and atmospheric scenes that make this season so special. 🍂

One of our favourite autumn paintings in the collection is Autumn Idyll by John Atkinson Grimshaw. With its glowing autumn leaves and misty light, it beautifully captures the mood of the season and is a perfect reminder of why this time of year is so inspiring.

You can see Autumn Idyll on display in the Study when you visit the Russell-Cotes.

We're open Tuesday-Sunday, 10am-5pm, so why not stop by and enjoy this beautiful celebration of autumn for yourself? 🍂
