"An Evening with Amelia Edwards in Bolton"

Join us as we host the Egypt Exploration Society for an evening celebrating the life of EES founder Amelia Edwards.
It will also explore Amelia’s journey into Egyptology including her personal relationships with several women as well as her work as a musician and novelist, much of which has only recently come to light.

The evening is FREE
Donations to the work of the Egypt Exploration Society are welcome

6pm-7pm
Dr Carl Graves, Director of the Egypt Exploration Society, will give a presentation about Amelia's life

7.30pm-8.30pm
Film screening of BBC ocu-drama "For the Love of Egypt", introduced by Prof Joann Fletcher

8.30pm until late
Reception in the museum galleries with a chance to relax and network

Bolton's Egypt Spring Study Day 2026
Saturday 6th June, 10.30am - 7pm

Only one week to go until our next Bolton's Egypt Study Day, where you can get hands-on with ancient history, guided by some of the UK's leading Egyptological experts!

In this "Animals in Ancient Egyptian Religion" Study Day experts include:
- Egyptologist Prof Joann Fletcher
- archaeological chemist Dr Stephen Buckley
- Egyptologist and Curator of Egypt and Sudan at Manchester Museum, Dr Campbell Price
- Egyptologist and animal mummy expert, Dr Lidija McKnight

In a series of talks and interactive hands-on workshops they will help you explore why animals were central to ancient Egyptian belief. You will learn why they were revered as sacred beings, embodying divine power, but also played essential social and practical roles in everything from food and labour to fertility and protection. You will explore the animals encountered by the ancient Egyptians, how they were featured in daily life, and how they were incorporated into the ancient Egyptian belief system of life, death and the afterlife.
The day will end with drinks and food in the Bolton's Egypt galleries with a chance to chat the the experts in a relaxed environment.

Have you ever wanted to learn to read and write ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphs?
In this 8-week course you can!

Bolton's Egypt are partnering with Hieroglyphs with Hazel to bring you a complete beginners course. Spread over 10 weeks, this course will take you through the basics of the Egyptian language. By the end of the course you will be able to recognise and understand the most common text in museums around the world.

Tuesday 5th May - Week 2 - Phonetic Complements and Determinatives
Tuesday 12th May - Week 3 - Titulary
Tuesday 19th May - NO SESSION
Tuesday 26th May - Week 4 - Divine Names
Tuesday 2nd June - Week 5 - Royal Names and Honorific Transposition
Tuesday 9th June - Week 6 - Formulas
Tuesday 16th June - NO SESSION

Tuesday 30th June - Putting Knowledge into Practice

COURSE FEE:
The course fee is £65 - thats less that £10 per session!
This covers all 8 sessions. The fee also covers all materials that you will need during the course. Refreshments are also provided during the sessions, which are included in the fee.
