Bo'ness & Kinneil Railway

Bo'ness & Kinneil Railway Located in the heart of the Forth Valley, Bo'ness & Kinneil Railway operate heritage steam & diesel trains and Scotland 's largest Railway Museum. at Bo'ness.

Bo'ness & Kinneil Railway is operated as a heritage railway by the volunteers of the Scottish Railway Preservation Society, a charity registered in Scotland No. SC002375, formed in 1961. Scotland's railway heritage is cared for by S.R.P.S. Much is already on display, both on the railway and in the Museum of Scottish Railways which opened in 1995 as the Scottish Railway Exhibition, but the collecti

on of locomotives, carriages and wagons requires further buildings to support conservation and maintenance activities and to enable the whole collection to be enjoyed by visitors. Our award winning heritage railway is only 45 minutes drive from Glasgow and Edinburgh, located in the heart of the Forth Valley, in the historic town of Bo’ness. Friendly, volunteer staff will welcome you aboard a heritage steam or diesel-hauled train. Your journey takes you along the shores of the Firth of Forth with views of the majestic Ochil Hills, before climbing a tree-lined gradient, passing woodland, wild flowers and waterfalls to the country station of Birkhill. Alight here to take a stroll in the ancient woodlands of the Avon Gorge. Departing Birkhill, the train crosses the impressive Avon Viaduct to Manuel, adjacent to the Edinburgh Waverley to Glasgow Queen Street railway line. Back at Bo’ness, visit the Museum of Scottish Railways, extended in 2012 with the addition of a 16,000 sq. ft. train shed to house the last remaining “Glasgow Blue Train”, a recently restored Class 126 Diesel Multiple Unit and several other heritage items of locomotives & rolling stock. In the main exhibition hall, operate a railway signal and points, climb aboard heritage locomotives and learn about the making, operating and using of Scottish Railways through the ages. Take time to sort some letters in the Post Office Sorting Van and view the classic video “Night Mail”.

05/12/2022

It was lovely to see the happy faces on board our Santa Specials over the weekend, thank you all for coming! Not long to next weekend now!
We were asked over the weekend about the history of the locos in action so for all here is a brief history.
Steam engine: “National Coal Board No.19 Fife Area” was made by Hunslet, Leeds in 1954 and weighs approximately 50 tons. We acquired No.19 directly from the N.C.B. Comrie Colliery in Fife and has four years left on its ten year ticket to run, this loco is planned to feature throughout the Santa services this year.

Diesel engines: 47643 ScotRail was originally built in 1965, weighs 116 tons and has 2500 horsepower.
Our standby loco is 37403 “Isle of Mull” was also built in 1965, weighs 107 tons and has 1750 horsepower.
Both diesels provide approximately 800 volts to heat the train keeping everyone warm and help with the heavy train.

We would like to thank the many volunteers involved in the run up to and over the weekend, we hope everyone enjoyed our and thank you Santa as well!

Great trip on Santa Steam Trains today.
Some Photos of the wonderful Railway and People at Bo'ness

During the summer
What a cracking weekend! Started with snow on Saturday and after seeing hundreds of visitors our Santa, Elves and loads of volunteers looked forward to a short rest before doing it all again in a few days time!
Following on from last nights post Mr A has decided he isn’t going to the party. The suggestion that we are all going was too much for him to process as he is used to going by himself with one of the ladies. When something is working you don’t break it! So we will try again next year!

Little Mr F didn’t want to go to his club either this morning. I asked him and his dad asked him and he said no to us both. I’m not forcing him. It’s important he knows if he says no that’s respected when it is possible for the answer to be no. (This is obviously not the case all the time!)

This time of year has a lot to answer for. While it’s a memory to treasure seeing the boys, Mr A particularly, be genuinely excited for Santa coming and want to go visit Santa for the first time in his 9 years and pick their presents for the first time the full change of routines and different things that happen really can throw them all out and I think the boys just needed a quieter day. It’s good they recognise that better now and let us know in their way so we can do it.

We went to see Santa a week past on Wednesday at his visit to Heads of Ayr farm park which they loved. Little Mr F is still unsure but he is getting there. Tomorrow we are going to the Santa train ride at Bo'ness & Kinneil Railway. I asked for some pictures to show the boys and they have very kindly sent these through and they’ve helped to prepare them for a new experience. Hopefully they enjoy it!

This is a photo from heads of Ayr…my wee superstars…

The Spa Valley Railway - Royal Tunbridge Wells, Kent turned Scottish during early-April, as the Railway played host to a bit of preservation history.

For the first time in preservation, CR 439 0-4-4 No. 419 and CR 812 0-6-0 No. 828 were seen in steam together outside of Scotland. The pair were the star attractions for two events - the 'Scottish Steam Up' and the 'Caledonian Steam Weekend', with the latter being a dedicated running weekend for the two sole surviving John F McIntosh designed locomotives! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

The footage from this video was captured from the 'Caledonian Steam Weekend' of the 8th - 9th April, which included solo runs, top and tailing, and double heading!
