Our award winning heritage railway is only 45 minutes drive from Glasgow and Edinburgh, located in the heart of the Forth Valley, in the historic town of Bo’ness. Friendly, volunteer staff will welcome you aboard a heritage steam or diesel-hauled train. Your journey takes you along the shores of the Firth of Forth with views of the majestic Ochil Hills, before climbing a tree-lined gradient, passi

ng woodland, wild flowers and waterfalls to the country station of Birkhill. Departing Birkhill, the train crosses the impressive Avon Viaduct to Manuel, adjacent to the Edinburgh Waverley to Glasgow Queen Street railway line. Back at Bo’ness, visit the Museum of Scottish Railways, extended in 2012 with the addition of a 16,000 sq. ft. train shed to house the last remaining “Glasgow Blue Train”, a recently restored Class 126 Diesel Multiple Unit and several other heritage items of locomotives & rolling stock. In the main exhibition hall, operate a railway signal and points, climb aboard heritage locomotives and learn about the making, operating and using of Scottish Railways through the ages. Take time to sort some letters in the Post Office Sorting Van and view the classic video “Night Mail”.

This Saturday 27th & 28th June we are substituting the steam engine with diesel loco Class 26038 ‘Tom Clift’ departing at 10:30, 12:30 and 14:30.
Sunday will also feature our Class 117 Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) departing at 11:45 and 13:45 which has disabled access.

Museum of Scottish Railways, Bo'ness Gauge O Group model railway and Station cafe will also be open this weekend.

With the forecast for the hot spell to lessen towards the weekend we feel this will help us look after the welfare of our steam crews and lessen the fire risk, as it gets quite hot on the steam footplate.

We look forward to welcoming everyone at the weekend for another Grand Day Out!

A look back to August 2025 when Forth & Tay Disabled Ramblers came for a run on our heritage diesel multiple unit (DMU).
We were delighted to host the group for a day, making good use of the disabled access on the DMU.
Currently our disabled access coach for the steam train is undergoing overhaul, we can however still offer disabled access most Sundays in the DMU at 11:45 & 13:45, with stunning panoramic views for all passengers.

“BEHIND THE SCENES AT THE RAILWAY”
Come and see “behind the scenes” at Bo’ness & Kinneil Railway. See our locos, carriages and wagons, many of which are not on public display, being restored by our skilled volunteers. Hear strange tales of railways long ago.
Conducted tours of groups of up to 10 persons lasting 11/2 hours are offered on Tuesdays at 11.00 starting from the historic waiting room at Bo’ness station. The tour will take you to see steam and diesel locomotives some of which may not have been seen by our visitors for half a century! And carriages from the Victorian times that last carried passengers nearly 100 years ago.
The charge for the tour is £8, inclusive of entry to the museum. You must be at least 12 years old. There is no upper age limit, but you must be able to walk for about a mile without difficulty, and be able to negotiate rough ground and trip hazards with ease. There are no rest points or toilets on the tour until the museum.
The tours can be booked online through our website or in person on the day at the Bo’ness station booking office on a first come, first served basis. The tour includes admission to the Museum.

It’s - the finale and let’s finish with some of our Station Staff who are probably the first and last volunteers you see when visiting our railway, we caught them just before the final train today outside Wormit Station Building at Bo’ness.

The final picture shows some our team as they are about to head home after another day of working at Bo’ness. Our small army of volunteers do us proud day in and day out, we couldn’t do it without you, thank you all.
