Due to heavy snowfall following Storm Goretti, icy conditions, and a yellow weather warning in place, The Museum of the Jewellery Quarter will be closed this Saturday 10 January. This decision has been made in the interest of public and staff safety, and anyone with tickets to The Museum of the Jewellery Quarter during this time will be contacted in due course.

The Museum of the Jewellery Quarter will return to its normal opening hours from Thursday 15 January. Thank you for your understanding, and apologies for any inconvenience caused.

Due to Met Office Amber warnings, we will be closing Museum of the Jewellery Quarter from 2pm on Thursday 8 January, and all day Friday 9 January, in order to ensure the safety of our staff and the public. We apologise for any inconvenience.

We are open on Saturday 27th December for guided tours of the Smith & Pepper workshop! Book your tickets here or drop in between 10.30am and 4pm. Our last tour of the day is 3.15pm.

Here is a map of Sarehole Mill dated 1807. Just above the Millpool there’s a field called Maggage Meadow with the tail race from the pool flowing down into the River Cole next to Mr Savage’s land.
Maggage Meadow is still there, albeit just the Recreation Ground now- and the tail race still flows into the river where there is now a ford on Green Road.
JRR Tolkien would have played on that field when he lived next to the field between 1896-1900. When he wrote The Lord of the Rings, he wrote about how Frodo Baggins was constantly being chased off a farmers land as he was always stealing mushrooms from his field. This farmer also lived very close to a ford and helped the hobbits cross the River on the Buckleberry Ferry on their way to Bree. And that farmers name was Farmer Maggot.
Was Mr Maggage the inspiration for Farmer Maggot? 🤔

Join us for our last kids jewellery making workshop of the summer on Tuesday 29th August.

Have a go at making your own piece of jewellery with the help of our friendly learning officers in this special children’s jewellery workshop activity.

Design and create either a bracelet or pendant, learn and use real jewellers’ techniques like texturing metal, hammering, stamping and enamelling to make something unique and personal to take home with you.

Pre-booking is essential as places are limited.

Recommended for ages 8 and up. For safety reasons we cannot accommodate under-5s.
Children must be accompanied by at least one adult. Due to limitations on space, strictly only one adult per booking.
Workshop lasts 2 hours.
