Cows Cooling Their Hooves

I spent a few days in the lake district many years ago, as I have always been drawn to cows in lakes, I took a photo meaning to create a drawing or a painting from it. This has finally come to pass! This is the second piece depicting cows in a lake, and I have material from the estuary at Porthmadog to create another with a backdrop of the mountains. The subject matter leant itself to an ink drawing and I thoroughly immersed myself in shapes and lines and dots and squiggles to re create the scene. I am very fond of cows. I wouldn’t mind having a few, and until I do, I’ll try to manifest them by drawing or painting them. Skies are notoriously challenging, but thanks to the internet there are countless instructional videos and inspirational methods to learn from. This piece brought to mind the wide-open grassland prairies of South Dakota, but it can be anywhere you like. On my travels with work, as a domestic cleaner, just as I was driving down the road from Cwm Penmachno, I observed a sheep standing satisfyingly central in a gap in the wall. It looked so pleased with itself that I laughed out loud, and the image was imprinted on my brain. I felt the urge to reproduce it and here it is. Creep holes are designed to allow livestock movement, at least the ones that can fit! Cwm Pennant is one of my favourite places in the whole world. It is a very special place; remote, quiet, sparsely populated and beautiful. This little bridge is almost at the end of the valley, where you can park up and have a bite to eat, or walk up to the bluebell fields. There are footpaths up to the quarries and plenty of artefacts to explore. Welsh black cattle graze the hillsides and birds and nature abound. I am a huge fan of pigs, but mostly live ones – I am not a collector of ornaments or stuffed toys. I would love to have a few of my own but sadly space is limited. My favourite breed is the Tamworth because they have a mischievous reputation, but any large pig with floppy ears reduces me to a squeaky mess. Not so fond of the kunekune…. This picture is of a Large Black, sadly an endangered breed.

I spent one winter teaching myself how to knit socks. It was a challenge and a half, but several pairs have survived, I think they’re stronger than the average sock! Sorting through my collection of wool I saw these three resting together on the desk. The texture and colours appealed for a still life study, and here it is. This ink sketch of an old farmhouse at the back of Cwm Eigiau has been hiding in a sketch book for years. In a period of clearing out I came across it and had a little moment to remember the nice sunny day we went for a walk along the black pipe and the road to the top of the valley. Like everyone else who has taken that path I'm sure, I noseyed around the house and saw that this valley, and the high mountains around it made the farmhouse look very small, bleak and lonely. I should think the many stories of life on this farm are very interesting.

Moel Trefriw

Moel Trefriw is on the left above the A470 as you travel from Llanrwst to Betws y Coed, and I pass and notice it every morning and night when driving the school bus to Cerrigydrudion. The shape of this small mountain, the freshly cut hedges, and the trees around It, have appealed to my eye for a long time, and I have used this scene to create a black and white picture and this picture with watercolour.

Bydd 10% yn mynd i Sefydliad Achub Mynydd Dyffryn Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Organisation fel yr arfer.
Many thanks to Ian the Landlord of Tafarn Penllan 2025 White horse Inn 2025 in Capel Garmon who has kindly given me wall space, and to Alwyn and Ceri, Cae Melwr for giving this painting it's forever home.. 10% will go to the Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Organisation as usual.
