Fun stuff to do while the children are at home!!

We're loving the Rainbow Trail now being created across the country by local school children. Look out for rainbows in windows of houses everywhere. Those of you who came along to Madam Mim's Potions classes at the Arbuthnot Museum, Peterhead and Aberdeenshire Farming Museum, Aden last summer will remember creating a rainbow.

All you need to create your own rainbow is a pack of well-known chewy sweets with hard shells (rhymes with brittle), a white plate and a little water. Arrange the sweets in a single row coloured pattern around the edge of the plate. Pour over enough water to just touch all the sweets and thinly cover plate itself. Watch and wait as a rainbow appears on the plate, the colours will move towards the middle and create streaks of colour.

Spread some colourful hope and cheer - we'd love to see your results!

So ... as our museums are closed during the present situation, we thought we would share some of our staffs' favourite objects with you and the reason why we chose each one.

With this in mind, we picked as our first object our only box of Victorian medicated toilet paper, which we thought would be somewhat apt!

By the way, it is kept in a secure, secret place as it is probably more precious at the moment than our collection of Banff silver.

Developing the Library Service - Live, Life Aberdeenshire

I have been asked to forward this to those interested in local heritage and history.
Good morning,

You may or may not be aware that the Library Service has entered a period of public consultation aimed at seeking views about how best to develop a more responsive library service for local communities. Could I encourage you to complete the survey, and to share the survey with your members to enable us to gather as many views as possible about library provision in Banchory? We would encourage both users and non-users of the library service to complete the survey.

The survey will only take 3-4 minutes to complete.

Links to the survey and associated information are listed below.

Carol Doig

We are seeking views on future library provisions in communities around Aberdeenshire to build a better understanding of how best to develop our library service.

This is why we love working in museums ... we get to spend days like this with fascinating people.

Had an amazing day yesterday with a visit from Bronze Age weapons expert James Dilley, who came to study our Bronze Age swords, take casts and then make some bronze replicas. He told us a great deal about the two swords we have at HQ, and the whole casting process was a revelation. He very kindly made a replica for us which we can use for handling sessions.

Thank you James, for such a fascinating day (and if you're interested, he does workshops!)

Now he wants to do the same with our halberds ... :D

Exciting news!

Aberdeenshire Council has launched a new and innovative way of delivering quality sports and cultural services that fulfil the aspirations of our customers.

To reflect this, all the Aberdeenshire Council owned sports and cultural facilities, as well as our developmental services, will now be known as Live Life Aberdeenshire.

Under this new brand we are delighted to launch our “New Year, New You, New Us” campaign. Our sports facilities, libraries and museums are throwing open their doors on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 January to host a wide range of free taster activities.

Please come along to your local facility to see what is on offer – hopefully you will find something new to inspire you in 2019!

Live Life Aberdeenshire remains part of Aberdeenshire Council but will be able to operate more flexibly and responsively than ever before.
For details of the New Year, New You, New Us events please visit our new website:

HAPPY to say that our favourite WW1 expert COLIN JOHNSON will be our special guest for this month's Heritage Society meeting. Colin will help us to bring this special year of remembrance to a close with his talk about the ending of 'the Great War'.
Anyone who has been to one of Colin's talks will tell you of his wry sense of humour and as always, you will come away from his talk knowing a great deal more about WW1 than when you came in!

As we approach the centenary of the end of World War One, director Peter Jackson has done something remarkable. Taking original footage he has re-mastered it and brought the lives of the soldiers who fought in the conflict alive, and created this remarkable film, THEY SHALL NOT GROW OLD. It will also be shown, I believe, by the BBC. Watch it and I dare you not to weep.

After parachuting into the Asian jungle as an RAF medic , Peter went on to join the NHS at the Royal Free Hospital as a clinical scientist.
In 1983 an outbreak of Lassa Fever led to the setting up of a medical advisary committee which Peter joined. He helped design isolation units (for patients with dangerous infections) and a special diagnostic laboratory. Peter is an RAF veteran whose life story is fascinating....come and meet him at the Heritage Society on 29th October.
