Ballymoney Town Hall

Ballymoney
BT53 6BE
(028) 2766 0230 The permanent exhibition contains remarkable and unique artefacts associated with the colourful history of this region. Visitors can see a selection of archaeological treasures that were discovered in the ancient landscape of North Antrim, beginning with the Derrykeighan Stone from whic

h the museum takes its logo. Another major feature of the display is a selection of rare artefacts from the troubled days of the 1798 Rebellion. Exhibits from more recent times including cameras from the Corfield factory in Ballymoney, the only cameras ever made in Ireland. Finally, the exhibition concludes with the story of the motorcycle road racing in Ireland and local heroes Joey and Robert Dunlop

The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions, often based on local history or showcasing talented artists. Combined with this are lectures, coach tours and seasonal activities for young people. In our History Resource Area, film enthusiasts have free access to the vintage home movies of Charlie McAfee and the NI Screen Digital Film Archive (see http://www.digitalfilmarchive.net/dfa/). This area also holds information useful for genealogical research and the museum hosts the 'Route Back Home' family history conference every two years.

Yesterday Ballymoney Museum welcomed a visit from Blesma, The Limbless Veterans NI and their family and friends for a tour of the NW200 exhibition. ๐Ÿ๏ธ๐Ÿ๏ธ

During their visit, the group were treated to a special chat about the motorbikes on display by their owner Robert Dixon and given the opportunity to handle objects with Museum Officer Jamie.

We hope they all had a lovely time in Ballymoney and will come back to visit us again. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Sindy or Barbie? Which did you have? ๐Ÿ’—๐Ÿ‘ฑ๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ

๐Ÿฅฐ๐ŸŒธ๐Ÿ’—๐Ÿ‘ฑ๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ All this talk about Barbie, but what about Sindy?
๐Ÿ’„๐Ÿ‘ ๐Ÿ‘—๐Ÿ‘›

Britainโ€™s top teenage doll was launched in September 1963 by Pedigree Soft Toys Ltd who were based in Exeter, Devon. They had been producing dolls for over 20 years and looked to create a trendy fashion doll.

Sindy โ€˜The Doll you Love to Dressโ€™ was launched, on Sunday 6th of September 1963 at 6pm with a 30 second TV commercial in the London area. The name โ€œSindyโ€ was chosen after a street poll where young girls were shown a photo of the doll and asked to choose their favourite name from a list of four. The most popular choice was โ€œCindyโ€, although the spelling was changed to โ€œSindyโ€.

Did you have a Sindy doll? or indeed still do?

Ballymoney Museum are developing a toys exhibition to open later this year and would love to know what other toys you think should be included.

Below is a 1980's Sindy Kitchen cooker unit recently acquired by Ballymoney Museum.
