Next up in our series of staff favourites is another from Helen, one of our Visitor Services Assistants!

"My favourite item at the cottage is in fact the big, huge old key.

While I know this key would not have been the key to the house when Burns lived there (as it's for the door in the "extension"), I love it! I wonder how many people have used the key to gain access to the house (was it used when the building was a public house?)
I feel the key itself holds a great deal of history.
I have let kids hold the key and we have discussed how many folk might have used it.

It's the big key to one of the most iconic and precious buildings in Scotland. When I'm on a shift in the kiosk this is not lost on me. It's a privilege to be permitted to be the keyholder to Burns Cottage on these days, a responsibility I don't take lightly.

So yeah, for me, it's the big old key!"
