Today's all about appreciating ART 🫶 and here's a wee reminder of the wonderful, world class art we have for you right here in Ayr!

Right now we have two wonderful exhibitions at Maclaurin Art Gallery by the renowned Scottish contemporary painters PETER HOWSON and FRANK MCFADDEN..

Right next door at Rozelle House Galleries there is a fantastic travelling exhibition of works by the late WILLIAM GILLIES. An evening talk is also scheduled (24 April) by Andrew McPherson who recently published a book on Gillies. Find out more on Destination South Ayrshire. As always, there is a permanent show of work from the GOUDIE COLLECTION.

Here is a great Art UK talk by Fraser MacDonald who is the Programmes and Engagement Officer for South Ayrshire Council (Rozelle House Galleries).

Firstly, if you have never heard of Art UK, it is charity providing fantastic resources for all things art related! As well as providing a database of public art collections in the UK, it also has interesting talks and articles provided by different art venues.

Fraser has kindly provided this informative, half hour talk foremost about Rozelle House Galleries but also Maclaurin Art Gallery and selected artworks from both Collections.

Sit down with a coffee, and enjoy ! 😄Let us know what you think too!

We were especially lucky to have another great Scottish painter launching his exhibition alongside Peter Howson's on Saturday. FRANK MCFADDEN'S 'A PLAYLIST FOR FIONNBARR' , a tribute to his young grandson. The show was opened by our Trustee and Curator, Dianne Gardner, who welcomed McFadden once again to the gallery along with his striking body of work. Frank pictured here with family, including his daughter Frankie and Fionnbarr.
Although both painters communicate deeply profound and sometimes uncomfortable meaning through their work, the essence of the launch day was very much warm, light-hearted and family orientated 🫶
Call in and see these 2 wonderful shows! On until 2 June.

Saturday's opening of PETER HOWSON'S 'TEMPUS FUGIT' exhibition saw beautiful Easter weekend sunshine and a great turnout of guests and their families to the event. Peter, also the galleries Patron, gave tribute to our sorely missed Celia Stevenson Judge as well as an endearing thank you to his parents, Tom and Janet Howson, who were also present to enjoy the afternoon. The show was officially opened by Dianne Gardner, Curator and Trustee of the gallery. The exhibition runs alongside fellow painter Frank McFadden's 'A Playlist for Fionnbarr' (more on Frank tomorrow!)
Two striking shows for you to call in and see!

Last week the gallery hosted an interesting art talk organised for our "Friends of the Maclaurin" who invited Ken Lemond of the Lemond Gallery in Bearsden to come along and speak about what's involved in running a successful, independent gallery. He also spoke of his passion for art and keeping an eye on the rising art trends globally. It was a fascinating insight.

Next up on the Friends of the Maclaurin's event schedule is a talk from art historian, Hildegarde Berwick, on the Scottish artist Bet Low (1924-2007), this year being the 100th anniversary of her birth. It's happening here at the gallery on

The Maclaurin Gallery

The Maclaurin Trust was founded as a bequest from the late Mrs Mary Ellen Maclaurin, who, in her Will, provided that curators appointed within the Will should, within five years of her death, build an art gallery and / or museum in Ayr to be called The Maclaurin Art Gallery in memory of her husband.

Premises were identified at Rozelle House and the Trust was granted a tenancy of the east wing of Rozelle House and curators were given powers to upkeep the art gallery and to purchase pictures and other exhibits.

The Trust has built up one of the best collections of twentieth century art in the country, part of which collection is exhibited from time to time and is lent to other galleries. The gallery also provides hanging space for various local art groups and attracts exhibitions from far and wide.
