Nocturne (The Badger and the Moon) - an oil painting by Helen Abbott. Painted on a vintage sheet of music.

Currently on show at Obsidian Art.

Helen explains the piece, "Nocturne in music is a gentle piece of classical music. Nocturnes traditionally would be played of an evening. Of course in nature a badger is a “nocturnal” animal out and about during the darker hours of the day, the evening and night time. A badger is symbolic of wisdom and strength. Badgers have a long established role in folk lore, fantasy and often given human like characteristics that make them relatable.
I love seeing the moon… I love to look up at it and know that where ever they are my family and friends can look up and see the same moon. It’s a connection to those I love even when they are not close… the moon brings us closer together.
A full moon is a time when emotions may be amplified… but I’m becoming acutely aware it’s also a time when I get more creative and ideas flourish.
This art work is painted on the music Nocturne Op24 by little known composer Theodore Dohler. The music used dates to around 1850 (although written earlier)."

Another of the guest arrtists currently showing alongside Ed Org at his exhibition now on at Obsidian Art Gallery: gorgeous hand-crafted sterling silver jewellery by Chloe Romanos.

Chloe is a French jewellery designer and maker now living and working in Oxfordshire. Chloe started learning and making jewellery when she moved to England. Her initial training in archaeology and my fascination for art and crafts inspired her to learn about transforming metals and combining different materials to create little poetic keepsakes.

Chloe says of her work, "I create statement jewellery that stands out on the body. I imagine and design pieces that are like small pieces of wearable art.
Each creation has a story behind it, from the winged creations inspired by French Art Nouveau to the textured effects I love to use, that are a reminiscence of the worn aspect of archaeological treasures dug up from the ground. I also like to let my imagination be guided by memories of inspiring places I have visited, quotes from books and poems I have read, or by the material itself."

"The elegance of Art Nouveau designs, with its strong curved lines and obsession for myriad of wings, is what inspires my ‘Fly Away' Collection, presented here. I like to play with the space in between, with shadows and with the way the piece can envelop the body and become part of it."

Chloe uses traditional silversmithing techniques to create contemporary statement rings, necklaces and earrings. The pieces are sustainably produced using recycled precious metals and a variety of precious and semi-precious stones including labradorite, opal, moonstone, amethyst, garnet.

Chloe studied jewellery making and silversmithing at the Jewellery School in Birmingham. She also holds a Master in Art History and Archaeology from Sorbonne University in Paris and a PhD in Archaeology from the University of Birmingham.
Her work has been showcased in exhibitions including the British Museum and the Royal Cornwall Museum.

Chloe's collection can be seen at Obsidian Art Gallery and also online at https://www.shop.obsidianart.co.uk/collections/chloe-romanos

A stunning hand-crafted tiara, which can also be worn as a necklace. Made from sterling silver with Ethiopian Opals by Tsedey Roscoe.

We are currently exhibiting a collection of jewellery by Tsedey as one of the guest artists showing alongside Ed Org at The Art of Ed Org exhibition currently on.

Tsedey explain the creation of this piece, "I aimed to craft an enchanted tiara or necklace inspired by The Art of Ed Org. Using sterling silver wire and sheet, I meticulously designed branches, leaves, and flowers that were then delicately soldered onto the wire. To enhance the woodland feel, I added beautiful settings for the Ethiopian opals. The design features links connecting the branches, allowing the piece to exhibit movement. This versatile piece can be worn as a tiara, necklace, or by removing some branches, it transforms into a pendant for a different look, providing a unique style for the wearer".

Tsedey is the artisan behind Elelta Bijoux, meaning 'Springtime' in the Amharic language of Ethiopia. Her designs draw inspiration from the ever-changing woodlands that surround us—capturing the essence of new spring growth, adorned with leaves and flowers.

Tsedey's collection can be seen in the gallery now and is also available to view online at https://www.shop.obsidianart.co.uk/collections/tsedey-roscoe

Another of the guest artists showing alongside Ed Org as part of our current exhibition, The Art of Ed Org : Caitlin Turner is a 21-year-old illustrator based in Cornwall where she is currently studying BA in Illustration at Falmouth University.

Caitlin says of her work, "I'm fascinated by other-worldly creatures, fae folk, and the dark qualities present in fairy tales.
I grew up looking at Ed Org's work as my parents collected his art, which has greatly influenced my tastes and personal style as an artist. I've been drawing non-stop since I was 11, constantly looking at art from creators like Brian and Wendy Froud to golden age illustrators such as Arthur Rackham.
I have worked on various illustration projects such as creating a book cover for a Cornish folklore anthology and have been a part of local exhibitions in Cornwall. I am at the start of my career, hoping to flourish making fantastical art!"

Cliodhna's Wave. An original pen and ink painting finished with gold leaf by Anita Inverarity inspired by Irish mythology currently on show at the gallery.
We are delighted to have Anita's work as one of the guest artists for The Art of Ed Org Exhibition on now until 24th March.

Anita Inverarity is a full time artist from the North East of Scotland working in traditional pen mediums. Inspirations include Mythology, Nature and Mysticism. Anita's work has been exhibited widely in galleries in the UK and US including several juried submissions in Scotland’s National Galleries and Museums in Aberdeen, Montrose and Moray. Recent projects have included work on several Oracle and Tarot Decks with US Games Systems and Animal Dreaming Publishing in Australia. In 2022 Anita's Zodiac series inspired the Fall Collection "Stargazer" by renowned Australian fashion house Zimmermann.

Anita resides with her partner Phil and their cats in an old farmhouse in rural Banffshire which they are gradually restoring as both a residence, reading room and home gallery. Many of the surrounding flora and fauna find their way into Anita's drawings, as do the local castles and standing stones.

New in the gallery - sgraffito ceramics hand made by Hannah Heys.

Hannah Heys is a multidisciplinary Artist and Designer, combining her passion for contemporary design with detailed craftsmanship.
Hand throwing and slab building clay forms, Hannah creates one-off vases using natural, black and white stoneware clay, incorporating intricate sgraffito designs in bold and bright colours.
The colour of each piece is dictated by the ‘personality’ of the form and the decorative sgraffito design of each vase naturally evolves to the contours of each vase, making each piece unique.
Hannah has been combining traditional methods of craft with contemporary design through her Textiles practice since 2010. Hannah’s practice has been a natural progression to now incorporate working with Clay, exploring form, function and texture when creating 3D objects to translate her more delicate designs.

Hannah will also be exhibition with us during Bucks Art Weeks@bucksartweeksofficial

New jewellery in the gallery by local maker, Heidi Fenn. This striking & unusual range can also be seen online at https://www.shop.obsidianart.co.uk/collections/heidi-fenn
Heidi is also showing with us for Bucks Art Weeks in June.

Heidi Fenn moved to London from Denmark and studied at the London College of fashion before eventually settling in Buckinghamshire. The Chilterns provide an ever-present source of ideas. She often takes a picture in her head, storing it away for future use. She is also inspired by the rugged landscapes of the north coast of Denmark where she grew up and modern contemporary architecture.

Primarily Heidi is a felt and fibre Artist, creating jewellery and wall art from pure sheep’s wool and mixed media including beads and other natural materials such as horsehair. When she found out that farmers were throwing their fleeces away during lockdown it had a profound effect upon her and she now uses mainly British sourced wool.

Her concrete jewellery embraces the imperfections which naturally occur during casting, ensuring that no two pieces are the same. Gold leaf or glitter enhance the natural textures of the medium, sometimes resembling stars across a dark sky or sparkly geodes,

See Heidi's work at the gallery now and during Bucks Art Weeks!

Inspired by ‘The King of Elfland's Daughter’, the1924 fantasy novel by Anglo-Irish writer Lord Dunsany.
Ed explains the story behind the piece, "When the men of Erl asked that they be ruled by a magic lord, their lord bowed to their wishes and sent his eldest son, Alveric, to the land of faery to win the hand of Lirazel, the King of Elfland’s sweet and beautiful daughter."
"However marriage between a mortal man and an elf princess can only end in heartbreak, and the land of Erl discovers that the imposition of magic rule is, at best, a mixed blessing."
‘With all these wonders Lirazel came for her son, and brought Elfland with her that never had moved before the width of a harebell over the earthly border’.
Lord Dunsany (1878 - 1957).

Designer jewellery lovingly hand-crafted by Sophie Court.

These lovely earrings are made from paper and acrylic and come packaged on Sophie Court's small presentation card - as displayed in photographs. As the finish on these earrings is multi-colour then the final colour will slightly vary for each pair of earrings.

The earrings have sterling silver posts, backs and butterfly clips.

Sophie Court recently graduated from the prestigious School of Jewellery in Birmingham's famous Jewellery Quarter where she completed a BA (Hons) in Jewellery and Silversmithing.
Sophie says, "I have always had an attraction for jewellery, even from a young age. I remember being fascinated by my mother and grandmother's jewellery and was constantly spending all my pocket money on new rings, bracelets, necklaces and earrings.
My first experience of making jewellery was at school, and as you can imagine this was my idea of heaven. I then went on to college and continued with my passion of designing and making.

What makes a piece of jewellery for me is knowing that its unique. This is my objective to my jewellery. Every piece I make is a one off. I choose unusual papers and manipulate it, either by embellishing it, painting it or layering different patterns and colours together. I laser cut the paper along with acrylic. I encase the individual piece of paper, like a photo in a frame."
Every necklace and bracelet charm is reversible and stands alone. Sophie's designs are simple and versatile and can enhance any outfit.
Sophie recently won a prestigious award - Best Fashion Accessory Award - at the British Craft Trade Show 2014.
