THIS IRIDACEAE (IRIS) PINK PAPERWEIGHT was recently added to the museum collection. They are hard to find. The paperweight has a pink iris flower applied to the surface and it measures about 8.5 cm across. These were designed by Elizabeth Harris and made 1983-1985 by Isle of Wight Studio Glass.

CREATING FLOWERS - CAMEO, CANES, ENAMELLED, MOULDED There are many techniques in glass making, too many to cover in one post, but here are four examples to create flowers. Cameos are created by carving, sandblasting or acid-etching the glass. There are usually several layers of coloured glass, but in this example created by Timothy Harris there is only one. The globe vase, also made by Tim, uses canes of glass with the flower pattern inside. These are chopped into slices and fused onto the surface of the glass. The moulded bowl was made for Etling, Paris around 1930. Finally, the enamelled vase with irises is by Legras, France, and made around 1900. Flowers in or on glass could be a nice area to make a specialist collection. Perhaps this post will inspire you!

ISLE OF WIGHT 'SEAWARD' HEAVY BOWL with coachbolt pontil mark will be in the museum shop soon. It was made in the second half of 1973 only. The bowl measures 13.5 cm across the rim and stands 4 cm high. These bowls do not come up for sale very often. Please contact us if interested.

AVON AFTERSHAVE BOTTLES have become very collectable. We have these two in the museum shop. The car is the "Straight Eight" spicy aftershave lotion and the hound is called "At Point" Tai Winds aftershave. Both originally date to the 1970s, we believe. Avon made many different models. It would make a nice collection to get them all.

ETLING TURTLES OPALESCENT BOWL is newly added to the collection. The bowl was designed by Lucile Sevin in the 1930s. The vase is 17.5 cm high to the rim and the hexagonal bowl is 30 cm across and 20.3 cm deep. There are six turtles facing upwards on the pedestal. A beautiful design.

THE GLASS MUSEUM IS CLOSED TODAY AND TOMORROW, 24-25 June 2026, due to extreme heat. We are expecting record temperatures on the Island and thus, for the sake of the comfort and safety of our visitors and staff, we are closing the museum. SEASCAPE AND GOLDEN PEACOCK ADVERTISING PLAQUES dating from 1988. One is for sale - a rare opportunity for the avid collector. These display blocks were used at Isle of Wight Studio Glass, but were meant originally for Stourbridge Galleries, which was run by the late sister of Michael Harris, Marjorie Heathcliffe with her husband Roy. The museum now has eight different plaques in the collection. The Seascape one was added yesterday. However, the Golden Peacock Green plaque is a duplicate and available for sale in the museum shop.

NEWLY ADDED TO THE COLLECTION Timothy Harris Special 'Flowers' vase probably made in 1994, but unsigned and undated (the museum has another vase of this same colourway dated 1994). It stands about 13 cm high. 'Flowers' was a trial range produced by Timothy Harris and Carl Nordbruch of which 15 pieces are known, including 13 vases and 2 perfume bottles. The museum now has five of them in the collection. All the pieces were of a different shape and size, but all have the characteristically shaped flowers. 'Flowers' proved too time consuming to make to be commercial, which explains why only a few examples are known.

RARE FLOWER GARDEN MIXED COLOURWAY The museum bought this footed vase for the collection at a local auction. It is very unusual because it's a mixture of the Larkspur and Lavender colourways. We have not seen another like it. Tim Harris of Isle of Wight Studio Glass suggests it was an end-of-day piece when leftover colour chips were combined. The vase measures 14 cm and 10.2 cm across the rim.

LALIQUE OWL AND NAIADES PIN DISH are in the museum shop now. Lalique is always popular because of the fine quality of the pieces. Both items are in lovely condition. Our shop has a wide selection of good glass, ranging from 18th century Georgian to contemporary studio. We hope to see you soon. The museum is open 7 days per week 10 am to 4.30 pm.
