Some of Armadale’s most familiar residents are also some of its smallest.

From Blue T**s darting between the branches to Chaffinches calling from the treetops and Buzzards circling high above, there is always something to spot if you take a moment to look and listen. Swipe through to meet a few of the birds you might encounter around Armadale.

Around Armadale this week… 

1. The first leaves have begun to fall from our lime trees, so we’ll be seeing a lot more of the leaf blower over the coming months! 🍂
2. Enjoying the pond lilies while they are still with us, before autumn properly arrives 🌸
3. Taking the quieter route with a few woodland walks around the estate 🌳
4. And after plenty of rain, the flowers around the gardens are looking more vibrant than ever 🌧️🌺

The Laundry at Armadale.

Built in 1822 alongside the Stables, the Laundry was originally known as the Washing House. Its Gothic-style details echo those found on the Stables, while its position beside the burn allowed the building to make use of the fresh water flowing downhill through the gardens.

Inside, a stove or boiler supplied four washing tubs with hot and cold water. The washing was dried using a pulley, and thanks to the boiler, there was also a hot press. Some of those working here had space to stay in the ‘women’s room’ on the upper floor.

At the time, the Laundry stood in a busy working area of the gardens beside the Little Garden, now the location of the Museum. This was the oldest part of the garden, used as an orchard by the Macdonalds since at least the 1600s and later as a tree and plant nursery.

A huge thank you to Linda, one of our museum archivists, for sharing this fascinating part of Armadale’s story.
