Just who was Sir John Moore? He became one of the richest men in England during his lifetime. Born in Snarestone in 1620, he moved to London to begin an apprenticeship with the Grocers' Guild. Here, he learnt his trade as a merchant. Navigating his way through the Civil Wars, he had his fingers in almost every pie in London. He lent money to businesses, shipping companies, and institutions. In the aftermath of the Great Fire of London, he lent money to get London rebuilt. But, faced with childlessness, Sir John chose to build a school in rural Leicestershire, near to where he was born. He asked his great friend, Sir Christopher Wren, to design it.

Remember when we found a letter dated 1695 in a cupboard at the school? Well, the museum has been researching its background, and we're ready to share it with you.
This tiny, folded letter was found in a cupboard during a school clearout. Dated 1695, it was written by a man called William Smart. It is addressed to Sir John Moore. It's basically a plea for money (Moore was probably the richest man in England at this time), but a detailed analysis reveals some much more information.

Hello! The car show will be on the second Sunday of August, as usual, but the museum won't be open this month.
Instead, it will be open on 13th and 20th September, when we'll have a brand new exhibition to unveil!

Welcome to one of the car shows hosted at the Sir John Moore free school. Everyday second sunday come on down we have food drink and of course excellent cars.
