On this day ( 1st September 1939 ), the first wave of the evacuation of children from towns and cities to rural locations took place. This was known as Operation Pied Piper.

Many evacuees were sent to the local area, including some Barnardo's evacuees, who were housed in many local stately homes.

What would be the first thing you would want to put in your suitcase if you were in their shoes? 💼

It was also on this day in 1939 that Germany invaded Poland.

Has everyone been having a good summer? ☀️😎

It looked like our Cordite Club were all set to enjoy the summer weather last time they were in The Devil's Porridge Museum.

Now it's nearly the end of August and our Cordite Club will be back on Monday 7th September 2026. 🥳

Our Cordite Club is a lunchtime club for retired people who take part in bingo or tombola and an activity which changes each time.

For more details or if you'd like to join us, you'd be welcome to get in touch with us. 🙂

Potatoes! 🥔
Grow them! Bag them! Put them in a soup! 🥔

If you'd like a bag of potatoes grown in our very own Dig For Victory Garden we're currently selling them for £1 a bag in our museum and Cafe. They proved a smash hit yesterday, so we can't guarantee they'll be around for long...

A huge thank you to Gordon and all our garden volunteers for growing them and helping to look after our Dig For Victory Garden. 🌱

What's your favorite way to use potatoes? Would you boil them, mash them, put them in a stew or something else entirely? 🥔
