The treasure hunt that gripped a nation

In 1979, artist Kit Williams published Masquerade - a storybook decorated with paintings whose intricacies held clues that would lead the successful sleuth to an 18-carat golden hare.
A phenomenon at the time, the book sold more than a million copies and sparked a worldwide hunt for the gold.
A series of events is now being staged to mark the 40th anniversary of Masquerade.
Find out how Ampthill features in the book by reading the following article:

How the clues within the picture book Masquerade turned the UK into a life-sized treasure map.

Lovely new signs to celebrate Ampthill's rich history

You may have noticed the new signage around the Town.

Funding for these was secured thanks to Councillor Mark Smith and the late Town Clerk, Dawn Sutherns, submitting a successful bid to the Central Beds Council 'Market Towns Regeneration Fund'. Deputy Town Clerk, Donna Searle, was instrumental in seeing the project through to its conclusion.

Each of the 5 signs reflects different aspects of Ampthill.s rich history.

The only one still to be installed is the Flitwick Road sign as the existing posts needed replacing.

The next element funded by the Market Towns Regeneration Fund will be the new Heritage Trail that will be installed shortly.

The 'Camp Diary'

March 1919 - has been dominated by sale of the Ampthill Camp. The Bedfordshire Standard has followed the Ampthill Camp from its establishment back in the October 1914. The newspaper tells the resplendent story of the Camp's rise and closure.
