UNDERGROUND!
There is some amazing underground scenery at Nenthead. This is a part of the mine that worked until at least 1910. The timber structure is a hopper for loading the mined ore into the waggons. The streaks and colours on the walls are the decayed minerals that have formed after the mine closed.

RAMPGILL MILL
The VMZ Co built a new processing mill at Nenthead in 1908-9, to replace the older plant built by the London Lead Co and the Nenthead and Tynedale Lead and Zinc Co. The new mill was capable of separating zinc and lead ores from the waste rock, whereas the previous mill was not capable of achieving a satisfactory output of zinc ores.

There are many photos of the new mill taken at different times in its life. This image is from a postcard collected by John Hine. It is thought that this image shows the mill during the construction phase. Note that the wagon hoist and the aerial ropeway to the dump have not been installed. The stone buildings on the roadside are the remnants of the London Lead Co wash house, market hall and school.

LOCOMOTIVES AT NENTHEAD
The VMZ Co purchased two petrol locomotives of 570mm track gauge for operating the railway from Brownleyhill to Rampgill, and for haulage underground in Rampgill mine from the Barneycraig Shaft.

These locos were made by Ruhrthaler of Germany and arrived at Nenthead in 1911 and 1912. The builders catalogue has an interesting winter picture. Despite the caption, we believe that this is a Nenthead winter picture.

We would just be getting to the end of the first Open Day of 2020.
I’m missing seeing our lovely helpful open day volunteers and all our visitors.
In lieu of this I’ve attached a few of the photos from last year - getting ready for 2019 and some of the actual days.
Take care everyone, stay safe and stay busy.

VISITING NENTHEAD MINES
Please do not visit the mines during the Covid 19 lockdown. This request includes the underground parts of all the mines at Nenthead.

By staying away you will help the national effort to stop the spread of the virus, help to keep people alive, support the people of Nenthead and enhance the public perception of mine explorers.

if you know or see anyone about to go in the mines, please give them some gentle, polite advice and ask them to stay away.

Thankyou!

RAMPGILL LEVEL
A wonderful old photo of men outside the level entrance. We are not sure of the date of this picture. Intriguing to guess the roles of the people. It would be great to restore and conserve this location.

SURVEYING THE LANDSCAPE
Mine waste dumps are a significant part of the protected landscape at Nenthead Mines - they are part of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
It is important to understand whether these dumps are static or whether the rain washes polluted material into the burns and rivers.
The best way to study the dumps is by regular mapping of the contours by drone cameras.
Weather permitting, the researchers are hoping to be flying above Rampgill Burn on 18th and 19th February.

Why Go Underground?
Our members who get involved in Underground Archaeology get to see some amazing sights. This is down a North Pennines mine, with a glimpse of the secondary minerals of iron, zinc and calcium that have formed after the mine closed.

Mine Trip 25th August
Visit from COMRU
Really enjoyed the Mines Open day today. Great and knowledgeable volunteers who catered well for my two children aged 13 and 7.. they had a brilliant time. Fascinating.. thank you. So glad people are keeping this history alive.

First day of Tours 2019
GeoAccess Ltd are looking forward to resuming our drone mapping and 3D modelling in the spring to help Nenthead Mines preserve and promote this important industrial heritage site.
Love the photo of the Grumpy Miner. On the subject of miners - there used to be a huge photograph of a group of miners on an outside stairway or steps and it was in the entrance to the Information Room (for want of a better description) at the Heritage Centre. Where is it now?
I enjoyed the Dark Side of the Moon, and am wondering where the performances might be repeated so I could take more friends / family? Can you help, please?
The Grumpy Miner prepares the mine for visitors
GeoAccess are planning a number of drone mapping flights at the mine from Monday 25th to Wednesday 27th June from 10:00 to 14:00. Subject to weather and area airspace restrictions. The drone will be flying above the minimum legal safe height so any visitors and walkers are safe to cross the flight area. Should anyone happen to come across our pilot, please announce yourself when approaching. Thanks for reading and please share this post.
I should add that viewing the 3D model takes up considerable memory space, please allow time for it to load initially and then as you move the model and zoom in/out
Using photographs taken by our drone, GeoAccess have created this 3D model of the mine buildings. The model can be viewed on Sketch Fab by following the link below. For the best viewing experience use Google Chrome on a PC/laptop using a mouse. If you have nimble fingers it can be viewed on a tablet. Interested in having your own 3D model, contact us via our page.
