Today is VE Day.

81 years ago today, an end to the conflict of the Second World War in Europe was declared after the unconditional surrender of the N***s.

This day was celebrated by many Northumberland Fusiliers who were stationed across many fronts by the end of the conflict.

One such soldier, Colour Sergeant Graham Worswick Hargreaves, who served with the 2nd Battalion of Royal Northumberland Fusiliers, collected these two service booklets for services he attended to mark the end of the war in Europe.

New for this season!

Alnwick Castle has debuted a new exhibition in the Breakfast Room for this season - 'The Shot Heard Round the World: Earl Percy and the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783)'

The exhibition explores the link between Hugh Percy, 2nd Duke of Northumberland, and the American Revolutionary War. The Northumberland Fusiliers, then called the 5th Regiment of Foot, were present at many battles during the conflict, as the regiment was headed by Hugh Percy who was Colonel.

You will be able to find many references to 5th Regiment of Foot in the exhibition, and see a cap badge in the display on loan from our stores!

After viewing this new exhibition, why not give us a visit to find out more about the history of the Northumberland Fusiliers!

Happy St Georges Day!

Today is very important for the Northumberland Fusiliers – it is their regimental day. It is marked with a procession, traditionally held in one of several Northumberland towns (one of which is Alnwick, most recently in 2022 as some images below show).

Members of the regiment of all ranks wear red and white roses in their headwear as can be seen in these archival images.

How do you mark St Georges Day?
