Our extensive WW2 collection is open to the public The interior of the house is predominantly 19th century in style.

Pool House is an historic house requisitioned during WW2 as a Royal Navy Command HQ for Russian Arctic Convoys and also overseeing the North Atlantic and Icelandic Convoys that gathered here in Loch Ewe. Move through 300 years of rich history and discover the dramatic events that have taken place within these walls and the many notable people that visited the house over the years. A courthouse in

the 1700’s, the setting for a marital battle that scandalised Victorian society, through to becoming a WW2 headquarters; there is something to delight, engage and captivate in every room. If your fascination lies with the paranormal, then you may hope to catch a glimpse of one or more of our three phantoms. You will find Victorian bathing machines, Chinese marriage beds and many collectibles and curiosities of the time giving an insight into the upper middle class lifestyle of the Victorian landed gentry.

Well we have a definitely have an autumnal feel in the air today so to complement it we have our homemade apple pie with custard available. This is made from the first of the apples from our garden! 🍏🥧🥰

We have signed up to raise funds for MacMillan Cancer Support this year. We will be hosting our “coffee morning and afternoon” from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm or from 1:00 pm until 3:00 pm on Thursday 24th September. There will be lots of tasty goodies and raffle prizes. We ask a minimum donation of £8 per person for this excellent cause. Please message, email or phone to make a reservation.

It is a stunning day and we have the perfect spot to enjoy a light lunch. Today we have tomato and roast red pepper soup, cheese scones with our homemade chive butter and leek onion and Gruyère tarts. Hope to see you ☺️

We would like to thank Brian Little of Signs elite Perth for yet again another stunning job at Pool House. It’s always fascinating to watch someone so talented particularly when it is free hand calligraphy! ❤️

We think the new sign is particularly apt with this “summer” weather we have been having! So please do pop by if you are passing and “Come in and take shelter”

What type of coats were worn on WW2 Russian Arctic Convoys? These 2 coats are just a small part of our uniform display.

John Blake Ltd from Accrington, Lancashire first introduced their hydraulic ram pump, known and trademarked as the “HYDRAM,” in 1867. These mass-producing famous water-powered pumps use the “water hammer” effect to move water uphill without any external power or fuel.

This fine example was commissioned especially for Pool House probably by Osgood Mackenzie’s (founder of NTS Inverewe Garden) father in law who leased and extended the house in the 1880’s. He was the incredibly wealthy Sir Thomas Moss.

It’s strange to think that well over a hundred years ago this innovation brought the first running water to a house in Poolewe!

Today its remains can be seen alongside the “new 1939 bridge”. A testament to Victorian engineering.
