One of our fantastic Front of House volunteers has written this post. 🙂

It’s really enjoyable volunteering at Haworth Art Gallery and Museum. The changing exhibitions mean that there is always a new perspective to discuss with visitors, even if they can occasionally be different – the exhibitions not the visitors of course.

It’s lovely to see such a variety of people visiting from all different places and countries, and its lovely to chat and discover things which they have enjoyed and learned.

The staff here are really good to work alongside, and when things are a little quiet they always find little jobs to keep you busy.

Volunteers are an important part of the team, and their contribution is valued!

As part of our ongoing project, we are working with Conservation Officer Jenny from Lancashire Conservation Studios (Lancashire County Council ) to condition check every object in our Tiffany glass and social history collections.

Condition checking is a really important part of collections care as the collections at Haworth Art Gallery and Museum belong to the people of Hyndburn and it's our responsibility to preserve them for the next generation of visitors.

This process gives us the chance to check for any flaws or changes to the object, think about its storage environment, and consider how else it might be used (e.g. as a handling and learning resource).

Thank you again to Arts Council England for their ongoing support with – watch this space for updates!

For all the mothers, parents and caregivers today we are celebrating all types of families 🌷

Families come in all shapes and sizes – some by choice, some by circumstance, with all as important as each other. We remain mindful though that Mother’s Day can for a variety of reasons, be a challenging day for some.

The Haworth’s were a close family and brother and sister, William and Anne, shared their home with Anne’s companion Ellen Priestly and hired staff from around the country. It was a house filled with life, music and art. Both Anne and William were very caring, kind and considerate towards their staff, who they treated like their own family.

The essence of Mother’s Day is about universal themes of love, connection and appreciation.

Have you spotted something new at Haworth Art Gallery and Museum?

Our Collections Team have pulled 16 Tiffany glass tiles from one of our back of house stores to create a new display in the Billiard Room cabinets!
These tiles are fantastic for revealing small details about the manufacturing process behind tile production – from the shape of the turtleback tiles showing how the molten glass would have been dropped into the tile moulds, to the untrimmed glass surrounding the edges of certain tiles that show the final stages before a tile is complete.
We would love to hear which tile is your favourite!

Haworth Art Gallery and Museum with The Hollins, Youth Panel have had a great first few weeks working on our Arts Council England-funded project.

The Youth Panel aims to expose students to a whole host of creative career industries, whilst inviting them to share their unique perspectives on Haworth Art Gallery and its collections.

The past three weeks have seen the students getting to know each other, how the Gallery fits into their ideas about the local area and their identity, and familiarising themselves with what to expect over the next 18 months!

Thank you to all the students for their enthusiasm so far & to Arts Council England for their support with the project.

Upcoming temporary exhibitions 🎨🖼🖌

Our next exhibitions will run from 5th April - 15th June.
Exhibition Preview Thursday 3rd April, 6 – 8pm.

The Morning Room and Drawing Room will have Anthony Taylor’s exhibition: Sticks and Stones and Other Things.

Inspired by the ancient stone walls of Menorca and by the artist’s own Accrington garden.
Anthony supposes he could be classified as expressive in nature. He is a figurative/landscape painter and takes inspiration from his own encounters with the landscape or events that have moved or interested him. The paintings 'Sticks and Stones and Other Things' represent Anthony’s interest in the ancient stone walls of Menorca which he compared to the crumbling sandstone walls decorating the moors behind Accrington. The 'Other Things' in the exhibition are points of interest from his own small garden, such as a recently pruned hedge.

Along the upstairs corridor the Friends of Haworth Art Gallery present an exhibition of paintings selected from our permanent collection of Accrington Art School watercolours.
