Science and Heritage – How to Heat Your House!

When William and Anne Haworth had their house built they wanted the modern luxuries. One of these luxuries was to have central heating. This was a complex ventilation system to ensure that the warm air circulated through the house.

When walking around the top floor of the gallery you will see beautiful metal grates on the floor complete with William's initials. These form part of the ventilation network allowing the warm air to travel through the house.

William and Anne also had fireplaces put in all the rooms so that the traditional way of heating was also possible. I wonder which they found the most effective?

Haworth Art Gallery and Museum – Work Experience

Today, we are delighted to share some of the comments from a brilliant, Year 12 work experience student, about the week they recently spent with us.

They loved the varied nature of being a Visitor Assistant and being able to help in many and various ways from weddings to the shop, and from checking the building to helping prepare for Dementia Friendly Crafts.
Their favourite part of the whole experience was meeting new people, and finding out about the teams varied backgrounds and routes to working here.

Thank you for all your help!

Have you ever stopped to notice this painting hung between The Gallery Kitchen and the bathroom?⚓

Sometimes overlooked in the corridor, “Coast Scene” by William Shayer is an impressive scene with children and animals, perspective and drama.

When you next walk past this painting, make sure to stop and allow yourself to be drawn in to the panoramic scene framed by a stunning gilt swept frame.

The painting (HAG3) is one of the paintings left by Anne Haworth for the people of Accrington.
All our oil paintings can be found on https://artuk.org/

Haworth Art Gallery and Museum: International Dog Day 🐶

Join us at the museum in celebrating International Dog Day, an occasion to raise awarness about the importance of adoption, rescue and animal welfare.

If you go to the front of the house you will spot our famous grotesques animals looking at you fron the parapet. Amongst them you will find a dog, as well as a bird, a ram and even a goat.
How many different animals can you spot? Let us know in the comments.
