Museum of Abernethy Volunteer-run, and celebrating Abernethy in Perthshire. Visit us to learn about Picts, Romans, kirks, witches, spuds and occasional ghosts.

We've been described as a . The Museum of Abernethy is entirely volunteer run; entry is FREE but donations are gratefully accepted! We have a range of exhibits covering different aspects of local life through the centuries, from the 3,000 year old logboat recovered in 2007 to daily life in more modern times - there's a lot to learn about the local area! We're keen to hear all your stories about life in Abernethy - from going to the shops to going to the berries, we'd love to know about it! If you'd be interested in talking to us about your life in Auld Abernethy, drop us a line at [email protected] and we can arrange to come and have a chat. Enquiries about local history are also welcomed - please do bear in mind that we're all volunteers so it might take a day or two to get back to you, but we'll always reply! Keep an eye out in the new year for info on events taking place in the museum - we look forward to seeing you all when we re-open next spring.

Well, it looks like we're going to have to face facts this ... the pesky ghosts are back and we can't get rid of them on our own (believe me, we've tried. Had the hoover out and everything. They just laughed at us). So, Abernethy, once again we need your help! Come along to Museum HQ from 6pm on Halloween and help us evict them for another year. You'll need your scariest costume, your funniest joke, or your most tuneful song - all helpers will be generously rewarded with sweeties!

Note for the grown ups: Museum HQ isn't open for visitors on the night, this is just a wee bit of fun for the bairns!

Join us on Friday 30th October at the Session House for a spine-tingling evening with acclaimed author Elaine Thomson! Taking a wee break from the poison-soaked crimes of Victorian London, Elaine has written two spine-chilling novels taking inspiration from the landscape, myths, and folklore of Scotland, which will be the focus of her talk (it is Hallowe'en after all...). It's going to be a cracking evening, so grab a ticket while you can - we'll have soft drinks and nibbley things available on the night, and the Kirk Session have kindly agreed that you can BYOB if you'd like to. We're very much looking forward to it, and to seeing lots of you there!

We do love a nice, scenic photo of our for , and this one is.... Oh. Oh no. It's happening again.... We were pretty sure we'd banished all those pesky ghosts last year as well. It's a PR nightmare, and we're gonna be in SO MUCH TROUBLE with Historic Environment Scotland if they get in the tower...

In case you missed it, a wee reminder about the fun events we've got on over Hallowe'en weekend!

On Friday 30th, join us at the Session House for an evening with bestselling author Elaine Thomson who'll be chatting about her spine chilling books exploring Scottish ghost stories. Tickets are £5 via our website; soft drinks and nibbles will be available courtesy of the lovely Kirk Session ladies, but you're welcome to BYOB if desired (plz mind we're in a Kirk though, so no Outrageous Behaviour!).

On Saturday 31st, we'll once again be asking for your help to banish our pesky resident ghosts - they're always so much more cheeky at this time of year! Don your best costume, practice your best turn, and get yer neeps ready - all helpers will be generously rewarded with sweeties! Note to the adults: we're not open to visitors on the night, this is just a wee bit of fun for the bairns!

We're looking forward to seeing you all over Hallowe'en weekend!

It's time for another and we are going back to October 1945, and the district news section of the Perthshire Advertiser.

The hot topics? The installation of electric street lights and the tattie harvest.

This amazing legal document we have in the museum shows how ornate and intricate handwriting used to be. (Although there are some that are not as well formed as this 😂)

Reading documents like this can be an integral part of a historian's research and once you get "the eye" for the writing of the past, there's some amazing wee gems to discover.
